And? How many audio backends should anyone need, particularly someone like me trying to keep an installation lean?
I guess minimum is - zero, depending on your needs, for which i don't know what they are ;-)
My needs are when I install a package that depends on other package(s), that those other packages get installed (or upgraded if need be) automatically along with the requested package, or the installation attempt fails due to unavailable dependency (and if in Factory, a bug gets reported if not already reported). Isn't that virtually everyone's needs?
I really don't care if KSCD works. I only tried because of that old KDE bug that needed updating. But if there's something I can do to help get it reliably working for other openSUSE KDE users I'll try to do it.
Well, we, or rather upstream, have already establish that audio CD playing does not work with phonon-vlc 0.6.1/2. You may, or may not wish to try latest version in KDF, which should produce a working KSCD, according to that report. Alternative is to use gstreamer backend, which is the only backend in vanilla 12.3, and still default for 13.1. I believe that should suffice to answer the question of this thread ;-)
I copied http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_Fact... to /etc/zypp/repos.d/, ref'd, zypper in kscd. It opens via menu, but stays on Unknown artist Unknown album 00:00 with vlc the only phonon-backend installed. When I click the KSCD X it crashes. When started from Konsole the messages seem to be the same as in the OTP, plus this in Konsole from crashing: KCrash: Application 'kscd' crashing... KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit sock_file=/root/.kde4/socket-big41/kdeinit4__0 QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 10 and type 'Read', disabling... Exiting KDE, installing phonon-backend-gstreamer* and allowing libphonon4 to be upgraded to new KDF version reduced the error messages a little, but still KSCD stays on unknown/unknown/00:00 and crashes on exit with same 4 line message, but preceded by "main stream error: cannot pre fill buffer". I tried upgrading to the newer phonon-backend-vlc from KDF next. That made KSCD play the music, though still with unknown/unknown for American Gramaphone title AGCD-355, bar code 0 1280-50355-2 1, Fresh Aire (#1) © 1974,1975. And it still only plays the initial track without futzing with a mouse. In every case, starting of KSCD is a very lengthy process. I'm guessing it takes more than a minute on 3.06GHz Core2Duo. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
