Knotes & Kalarm Lost The Plot

Can someone explain how Knotes & Kalarm can suddenly lose all my previous notes & alarms? My ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes directory still contain the knote_data files, but they are zero byte files and my ~/.kde/share/apps/kalarm has the ".ics" files but they contain no valid data. This appears to have happened after ooo.org's calc program caused my system to freeze (which it does with monotonous regularity) requiring a hardware reboot.
