It definitely does more than nothing in Fedora 19's current implementation. I expect first instance on new installation (empty ~/.kde)(at least) to open according to xorg.conf specifications. In F19's 4.10.4, PreferredMode is overridden by EDID's supposed ideal (CRT) mode.
Which xorg.conf, if I may ask ?
Any one which can reverse globally-forced 96 DPI before KDM ever accepts its first login. :-) e.g., one based on http://fm.no-ip.com/Share/DisplaySize
Looking at my installation I do not have any xorg.conf and as far as I know this became obsolete with one of the later Xserver versions.
What's obsolete is its universal necessity, not its supported availability.
I do have xorg.conf.d which contains the settings for mouse, synaptics, etc. But I do not have any screen setting in there.
Probably most people with average or better eyesight can manage with what automagic provides. The problem is it can be much harder or even impossible for people faced with too small GUI text to make it big enough than the other way around.
What was the version of KScreen included in F19 ?
The one I uninstalled was reported by yum.log as 0.0.92-1.fc19, which had been installed 06 May.
The official 1.0 was only released last week, so I wonder if this wasn't resolved already.
I'd like to know, but in light of my current backlog of todos, personal investigation in the foreseeable future will not be a priority.
Kscreen for openSUSE will only be delivered with KDE 4.11 and this combination is currently available in KDE:Distro:Factory.
This kind of answer is what I was looking for by starting this thread. :-) -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
