This list here, however, does not even use a "Sender:" header according to RFC822, which means that a simple hit on "Reply" will reply to the poster personally, not to the list. But the pros and cons of this behavior have been discussed ages ago and to my knowledge most people on this list have agreed upon the current settings.
I didn't say anything about changing this list. As I said, I wanted my friend to make her list work the way this one does when a reader selects "Reply to Mailing-list".
I got that. I was sort of hijacking your post to add some rant ;-)
However, what I see when I read the list doesn't quite correspond to what you say above. I'm reading with KMail 1.9 in KDE 3.5.0a, and mail from *this* list gets the same result whether I choose "Reply" or "Reply-to-Mailing-List". In either case, a reply opens with the _list_ address in the "To:" field.
Interesting. I'm reading with a Windoze Outlook client and when i click "Reply", Outlook uses your personal address, not the list's address.
I suppose that's less functional than having two different results from two different commands. However, as you say, most people on this list happen to like how it works now.
Yes, that's what i observed, too. OK, now back to your topic again:
So, if I wanted my friend's list to set up posts: - to reply to the sender when a reader chooses "Reply"
- to reply to the list when a reader chooses "Reply to Mailing-list"
Basically, this requires a setup similar to the one that is used by this list, i.e. have a "List-Post:" header with the list's address and *no* "Sender:" header or configure the "Sender:" header to be the poster's address. (Don't know if your friend's mailing list software supports this.)
which lines would need to be written to headers of messages that are handled by her listserve?
Off-topic rant again: The term "listserv" (and similarly "listerve") is reserved by L-Soft, the providers of LISTSERV(r) since 1986. However, i won't tell my boss about it ;-)) If by some chance your friend actually *is* using LISTSERV, i'll work my heart out to help her achieve what she wants. I'm not too acquainted with other mailing list products, though. Robert
