I shall experiment with deleting all my existing filters, and then redefine them, as suggested by Viljo, but I suspect I'm going to stick with Thunderbird for now.
Well, rebuilding all the filters made no difference. :(

This discussion motivated me to give kmail another try. I removed everything I could find that was somehow related to akonadi stuff (a new /home is too much for me) and configured kmail and kaddressbook anew. Filters and integration between addressbook and mail are now working, before I was not able to get them working. I am usinig pop3.
It seems succes is not garanteed, but I am happy with my kmail at the moment. Thanks for the discussion.
Hi Cor,
It's possible/probable that my latest attempt pulled in some old settings. Can you remember which akonadi-related stuff you cleared out? Or would you recommend removing *everything* with 'akonadi' in the path?
Hi Bob, I "recommend" nothing. It is just something I tried. And I could as was not using it (so whether devs support it or not, I didn't care). I wiped out under .kde4 everything akonadi, mail settings, addressbook stuff, and under .local/share also mail, contacts, etc. Maybe I did something under .config. I did have of course a second copy of all those data in thunderbird and backups. Maybe there is a nicer way to wipe everything out, but I do not know what.
