Several days ago I lost my Desktop on SuSE 10.1 after the zmd updater
had a hernia and didn't complete updates.
I got my Desktop back after I installed the latest KDE 3.5.3 RPMs.
However, what occurs now is that I get an error message on login, "KDE
Daemon - The KDE Crash Handler. The application KDE Daemon (kded)
crashed and caused the signal (SIGABRT)". Closing this msg box allows
the OS to continue, but.....
if I insert a CD or a DVD I do not get the autostart drop-down menu as I
did before and the CD or DVD does not appear as an entry under My Computer;
in the My Computer menu the entries for /media/floppy, /media/dvd, and
/media/dvdram all show that each has a capacity of 32.03GB with 23.04GB
inserting a flash disc also does not produce and entry under My Computer;
even though no entry appears under My Computer for an audio CD or a
video DVD both are playable thru either the media player or xine (DVD);
going to a terminal and using mc (Midnight Commander), no entries appear
for the CD or DVD or the flash disk in the /media directory;
trying to run kded from the command line fails;
I did something (which I don't remember :-) ) and received the error
message, "kde mediamanager not running".
I created a new, dummy, user and a login as this new user - and even as
root - does not produce this problem: the autostart box appears and My
Computer shows the entry for the just insterted CD or DVD or flash disk.
The problem only shows up for me as the original user when the system
was first installed.
I guess that the problem lies with some leftover garbage in my /home to
do with /.kde or somewhere else.
Does anyone know what I would need to delete (some control file, log
file or whatever) so that I can back to the "good ol' times" when I
could see the entries for CD, DVD, flash disk?
I need to install some software from a CD but as I cannot see its
contents using Konqueror or mc I am "grounded" :-( .
Any suggestions re this hassle most welcome.
