[opensuse-kde3] How to get rid of plasma5?
Hi, I have some strange behavior in newly installed Leap42.1 with plasma5 and KDE3. After logging in to KDE3, write click on desktop brings in plasma5 menu. If I use personal settings->desktop->behavior and change something (like defining left button click as application menu) and "apply", I'm getting normal KDE3 menu upon clicks. But only till next reboot/re-login. Display manager is set to kde3 and windows manager to KDE (or twm, same behavior). Not sure where to look at? It there some setting I've forgotten to change? -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Based upon the integrated instructions, for KDE3 these things are not necessarily intuitive: # grep WM= /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager DEFAULT_WM="startkde" # grep DISPLAYMANAGER= /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thanks Felix, I'll try later. DISPLAYMANAGER is set correctly (I had to create symlink kde3 though), but I'll check WM, I think it was KDE or TWM. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

After rebooting?
Somehow default handler of mouse click event seems to be set to plasma5...
Just ideas: 1-zypper rm gdm lightdm lxdm sddm 2-find kdmrc and set UseTheme=false 3-force re-installation of kdebase3-workspace and kdebase3-session 4-if not using en_US locale, try it or something other than what you are using to see if it makes a difference -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Will start with 3, probably. I actually have another system with leap 42.1 and KDE3 and no such problem there. But I installed it quite some time ago and vaguely remember having some issues with persistence of plasma5. Probably re-installed it without plasma5 at all, but do not remember... Re-installing of kde3 packages did not help. I've re-checked another system and now I'm sure I eventually re-installed 41.2 with minimal Xwindows without plasma and then added KDE3. Might prove easier to have YaST2 remove the Plasma pattern. If you want a chance to know what package(s) cause the trouble, try removing one or a few bits of plasma5* and libKF5* at a time and trying KDE3 after each removal. Then if you succeed and want to add Plasma back, try setting solver.onlyRequires = true in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf to setup a lighter weight (Plasma) installation. Maybe some "optional" part of KDE3 isn't truly optional. This is a list from this 42.1 installation (which was initially a minimal X installation, followed by enabling onlyRequires, then adding KDE3; it has no libKF5* installed): # rpm -qa | sort | egrep '3.5.10|kde3|kate|qt' kde3-cpuinfo-0.5.2-5.3.x86_64 kde3-digikam-0.9.6-46.3.x86_64 kde3-digikam-lang-0.9.6-46.3.noarch kde3-gtk-qt-engine-0.8svn20071009-64.1.x86_64 kde3-gwenview-1.4.2-149.3.x86_64 kde3-gwenview-lang-1.4.2-149.3.noarch kde3-k3b-1.0.5-67.3.x86_64 kde3-k3b-lang-1.0.5-67.3.noarch kde3-kio_iso-1.90.0-17.3.x86_64 kde3-kipi-plugins-0.1.6-35.4.x86_64 kde3-kipi-plugins-lang-0.1.6-35.4.noarch kde3-koffice-1.6.3-311.3.x86_64 kde3-koffice-database-1.6.3-311.3.x86_64 kde3-koffice-spreadsheet-1.6.3-311.3.x86_64 kde3-oxygen-icon-theme-4.0-1.1.noarch kdeaddons3-kicker-3.5.10-38.2.x86_64 kdeaddons3-konqueror-3.5.10-38.2.x86_64 kdeaddons3-sound-3.5.10-38.2.x86_64 kdeadmin3-3.5.10-54.3.x86_64 kdebase3-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-apps-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-kdm-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-runtime-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-session-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebase3-workspace-3.5.10.1-394.2.x86_64 kdebindings3-3.5.10-137.4.x86_64 kdegraphics3-3.5.10-153.1.x86_64 kdegraphics3-extra-3.5.10-153.1.x86_64 kdegraphics3-imaging-3.5.10-153.1.x86_64 kdegraphics3-pdf-3.5.10-153.1.x86_64 kdegraphics3-scan-3.5.10-153.1.x86_64 kdelibs3-3.5.10-285.1.x86_64 kdelibs3-arts-3.5.10-285.1.x86_64 kdelibs3-default-style-3.5.10-285.1.x86_64 kdemultimedia3-3.5.10.1-50.1.x86_64 kdemultimedia3-arts-3.5.10.1-50.1.x86_64 kdemultimedia3-mixer-3.5.10.1-50.1.x86_64 kdemultimedia3-sound-3.5.10.1-50.1.x86_64 kdemultimedia3-video-3.5.10.1-50.1.x86_64 kdenetwork3-3.5.10-162.3.x86_64 kdenetwork3-IRC-3.5.10-162.3.x86_64 kdeutils3-3.5.10-119.2.x86_64 kdeutils3-extra-3.5.10-119.2.x86_64 libdbus-1-qt3-0-0.8.1-175.1.x86_64 libkate1-0.4.1-23.1.x86_64 libkcal-3.5.10-279.1.x86_64 libkcal2-3.5.10-279.1.x86_64 libkmime2-3.5.10-279.1.x86_64 libktnef1-3.5.10-279.1.x86_64 liboggkate1-0.4.1-23.1.x86_64 libopencv-qt55_4-2.4.11-2.10.x86_64 libqt4-4.8.6-10.2.x86_64 libqt4-sql-4.8.6-10.2.x86_64 libqt4-x11-4.8.6-10.2.x86_64 libqt5-qtbase-platformtheme-gtk2-5.5.1-10.1.x86_64 libqt5-qtct-0.20-3.1.x86_64 libqt5-qtimageformats-5.5.1-3.1.x86_64 libyui-qt-graph7-2.44.5-1.3.x86_64 libyui-qt-pkg7-2.45.5-1.2.x86_64 libyui-qt7-2.46.21-1.1.x86_64 misc-console-font-3.5.10.1-393.1.x86_64 qt3-3.3.8c-281.1.x86_64 vlc-qt-2.2.4-30.2.x86_64 yast2-control-center-qt3-2.17.3-10.1.x86_64 yast2-qt-branding-openSUSE-42.1-6.2.noarch -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I checked 10 TW/KDE3 installations total to confirm this. All six 32 bit failed. Three 64 bit failed. One 64 bit worked. I compared installed kde3 package lists between the working one and another 64 bit, then did: zypper -v in bundle-lang-kde-en kde3-kcm_gtk kdebase3-SuSE kdebase-SuSE-branding-openSUSE kdebase3-SuSE-lang yast2-printer yast2-sound on a 64 that failed. Now it works too. Next up was try package by package with another failing 64 bit installation, to find the responsible package. It still doesn't work, even after rebooting. Thanks a lot, Felix. In my case I could not find bundle-lang-kde-en (probably it does not exist in 42.1?) and instead of kde3-kcm_gtk I have kde3-gtk-qt-engine. But I've also noticed that right-clicking on desktop while KDE3 is starting brings up correct KDE3 menu and only after some time it changes to plasma' one. So probably I do have everything needed, but some process started by plasma intercepts event notification. Need to find out which one handles this type of events in KDE3 and in plasma5. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, .xsession-errors:0 is produced and similar to yours. 1st thing I see there is parcellite which seems to be kde4/5 and Klipper from KDE3. Will probable remove parcellite. Looks like it have some configurable plugins and I see the message: Plasma Shell startup completed right after parcellite plugins messages. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

I added some printouts to startkde3 script. Of course parcellite is not a problem. The problem starts after execution of "kwrapper ksmserver". After that point somehow the processes of plasma5 are started (krunner, plasma shell activity manager and probably more). I need to see what "shared" configurations causes kde3 to start these processes.

Looks like it have some configurable plugins and I see the message: Plasma Shell startup completed

As Felix suggested, I removed some patterns (plasma5, plasma5-session, plasma5-workspace and dependencies) and the problem disappeared. I'll try to see later if I can find exact reason why plasma5 components are started under KDE3. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
My tip is: Remove all non KDE3 related patterns that relate to Plasma. or Start from non graphical installation and install your way up carefully to KDE3 at the same time making sure no plasma packages aregetting installed. On Saturday 27 August 2016 09:43:40 Mark Goldstein wrote:

Yes, that was what I did on another system (minimal X and then added KDE3). My purpose was to have both kde3 (as main desktop) and plasma5 (try configuring it to my taste, which was impossible till now). I'm afraid at some stage we'll be forsed to switch from KDE3. KDE4 had some bugs that were never fixed and made it not-usable for me. So I'm trying other options. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Do first thing after install completes: solver.onlyRequires = true in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf. Taking all the suggests/recommends without question translates to bloat for dubious benefit.

I'm seeing as much lost as gained in Plasma as upstream continues reinventing the wheel and leaving old bugs lie fallow or wontfix. It's looking to me since Ilya retired as KDE3 maintainer like when 42.1 support expires and upgrading to 42.2 becomes necessary that KDE3 will likely no longer be viable. Luckily, TDE has a respectable multi-distro user and developer base, and has had most remaining KDE3 bugs eradicated without any material loss of functionality, or noticeable bloating. The main thing I don't like about TDE is the menu is nearly void of submenus, so finding wanted apps takes considerably more vertical eye movement scanning longer listings. Another thing I don't like is it isn't built for TW, which is not a concern for my primary machine, but does limit its triage utility. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
