[opensuse-kde3] TW KDM times out, doesn't start
Anyone else not getting KDM any more since updating TW to 20180928? Startx works. Felix, I don't have TW, but I can't test, but it shows ExecStart=...(code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) which is normal (at least for 15, e.g.) 22:25 vlleap15:~> sc status xdm ● display-manager.service - X Display Manager Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/display-manager.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: failed (Result: timeout) since Wed 2018-10-03 22:25:25 CDT; 11s ago Process: 964 ExecStart=/usr/lib/X11/display-manager start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Tasks: 5 (limit: 4915) CGroup: /system.slice/display-manager.service ├─1161 /opt/kde3/bin/kdm └─1177 /usr/bin/Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-IjDiXh What is different and what has changed is: Can't open PID file /var/run/displaymanager.pid (yet?) checking on 15, there is no /var/run/displaymanager.pid, so why TW is looking for one is not something seen earlier. Also normal is the: Oct 03 22:25:25 vlleap15 systemd[1]: display-manager.service: Start operation timed out. Terminating. Oct 03 22:25:25 vlleap15 systemd[1]: Failed to start X Display Manager. Without knowing more, it looks like there has been a requirement added for the /var/run/displaymanager.pid file which is never found. Instead, for kdm3, I have /var/run/kdm.pid not /var/run/displaymanager.pid -- David C. I don't know. I've used kde3 since 10.x and I can look back as far as 42.3 on running systems and see there is no displaymanager.pid. It has always been kdm.pid. If needed I can find the old drives and check 11.4 and 13.1. I did get a kick out of checking line 203 in /usr/lib/X11/display-manager on 42.3: # make sure to stop the running one (Bug #306035) if test -s $PIDFILELNK; then -- David C. thats the bug. I struggeld above the same. /usr/lib/systemd/system/displaymanager.service uses displaymanager.pid which should be a link to kdm.pid (or whatever displaymanager you use). Look at line 203 in /usr/lib/X11/display-manager

I can't grok. Link in line 203 of /usr/lib/X11/display-manager? -rwxr-xr-x 1 7227 Aug 2 09:29 display-manager ln -snf $PIDFILE $PIDFILELNK And, when? When troubleshooting, I'm in multi-user, not graphical. I actually have two TW20080928 installations on one PC, both with kdebase3-kdm as only DM, but one with only KDE3 & IceWM, and one with only Plasma & IceWM. With KDE3, KDM3 worked yesterday. The one with Plasma caused my OP. However, just booted it, logged in via KDM, and /var/run/kdm.pid rather than displaymanager.pid existed. Thinking I was misremembering, I rebooted to the KDE3 installation, and KDM failed to start, with /var/run/kdm.pid existing. The whole boot process on this PC seems really slow, so maybe there is a physical timing issue involved causing the display-manager.service timeout? KDE3# systemd-analyze blame | head -n9 1min 30.126s display-manager.service 18.685s backup-rpmdb.service 18.331s logrotate.service 14.527s lvm2-monitor.service 10.594s dev-sda23.device 8.219s ntp-wait.service 5.303s systemd-update-utmp.service 4.608s initrd-switch-root.service 4.266s wicked.service So I rebooted to the Plasma, and KDM started. However: Plasma# systemd-analyze blame | head -n9 Bootup is not yet finished. Please try again later.
