All, I stumbled across this on a stray rabbit trail. Compiz .8 is still in active development at https://github.com/compiz-reloaded I have used the version we ship with kde3, and while functional, it is missing many of the plugins from both main and extra plugin groups. I don't know (haven't extracted and looked at) what the origin for the current compiz sources are, but the compiz-reloaded code may provide a much improved source for packaging.
