[opensuse-kde3] external storage notify and removal
42.1 yet to be updated to 42.2, largely due to included (wontfix upstream) bugs: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1269274 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=757142 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781807 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=367499 I put in a USB stick, window popped up asking what to do, I answered new window, and a new Konq window appeared showing content of stick. Nothing appeared on taskbar or system tray to facilitate knowledge of or safe removal of attached removable media. Then, I put in a DVD disc, window popped up asking what to do, I answered new window, and the content of the already open Konq window showed content of the DVD, with no chance of the back button to return anywhere. Content of stick was no longer anywhere to be found. Nothing appeared on taskbar or system tray to facilitate knowledge of or ejection of attached disc. 1-does the above describe what should happen with Konq windows when two removable media are inserted and "new window" is the selection in each case? 2-what's missing that nothing appeared in the system tray after inserting either removable media? I tried adding and 1 stick, plus 1 "CD" (generically labeled), plus 1 DVD (correctly labeled) appeared in the tray. Trying to safely remove the stick succeeded to umount, but (kio_media_mounthelper) reported both successful unmounting, and that the non-ejectable device could not be ejected. On ejecting the DVD, the tray still shows the phantom CD, confirmed by mount command output: /dev/sr0 on /mnt type iso9660 (ro,relatime). I see nothing in /etc/fstab to explain this. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. When this happens, I generally find a reference is still available in /proc/mounts, or on occasion in the 'system' or 'storage' tab of konq. Nothing appeared on taskbar or system tray to
facilitate knowledge of or ejection of attached disc.
1-does the above describe what should happen with Konq windows when two removable media are inserted and "new window" is the selection in each case?
No - when you choose "new window" from the pop-up dialog, you should get a new window regardless of the number of konqs open. (although I do recall a setting in konq to open folders in new tab that may play into this behavior, at minimum you should get a separate tab in an existing window similar to pressing ctrl+t in konq.

IIRC this is a systray notification issue that has been around for years (dcop/dbus) rule mix up. That's just from a vague memory. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1044864 for absence of systemtray object. Note in the bug that I was able in 42.2 to get a systemtray USB attached object on one PC that was only temporarily in my possession. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You shouldn't be. I'll make a point to file all bugs there now. Recall after 11.0 and the forcing of the 'KDE 4.0.4 "Release"' on opensuse as a default, all KDE3 bugs filed thereafter were automatically closed as "Wont' Fix". That's when I quit filing them with opensuse -- after about the 5th one, then tried kde4 and wrote over 200 bugs against it, then went back to KDE3 because I couldn't spend an hour a day, every day, tracking down why things didn't work in kde4. (I did the same against Plasma/Frameworks 5) If the opensuse bugzilla will take kde3 bugs, I'll file them there. As I've expressed a number of times, the patched KDE 3.5.10 that we have here has been rock solid and avoids the renaming complexities and separate tqtinterface interface layer incorporated into TDE. (it also lacks about 5 years of solid bug fixes TDE has had on the downside). However, other than a simple td... kd... rename, all the TDE bug fixes can be dropped directly into our KDE as patches. So if you find a TDE bug fix you like, lets just incorporate it as a patch here. I guess we should set up a build environment. I haven't tried here, but the build order should be ascertainable for the .spec files and the original svn.kde.org 3.5.10 source tree. -- David C. You shouldn't be. I'll make a point to file all bugs there now. ... If the opensuse bugzilla will take kde3 bugs, I'll file them there. In the past 60 months I filed 8 bugs against KDE3. 2 have status resolved. The other 6 remain open: <https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/buglist.cgi?chfield=[Bug%20creation]&chfieldfrom=5y&chfieldto=Now&columnlist=changeddate%2Crep_platform%2Cbug_severity%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Cproduct%2Ccomponent%2Cvotes%2Cshort_desc&component=KDE3&email1=mrmazda%40earthlink.net&emailreporter1=1&emailtype1=exact&known_name=all%20my%20bugs&list_id=7035835&query_based_on=all%20my%20bugs&query_format=advanced>
Total KDE3 filed in past 60 months is 37, including 5 duplicates. Total open is 12 (4 of which for out of support releases): <https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/buglist.cgi?chfield=[Bug%20creation]&chfieldfrom=5y&chfieldto=Now&columnlist=changeddate%2Crep_platform%2Cbug_severity%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Cproduct%2Ccomponent%2Cvotes%2Cshort_desc&component=KDE3&f1=bug_status&f2=bug_status&known_name=all%20my%20bugs&list_id=7035897&o1=notequals&o2=notequals&query_based_on=all%20my%20bugs&query_format=advanced&v1=resolved&v2=verified> 965242 I've not seen in a while, so I suppose that's been fixed somehow. Ilya left quite some time ago, probably over a year, yet he's still the default assignee, and no one seems to be triaging or otherwise tending any of them except maybe by accident.

By my count, TDE has more open bugs on openSUSE than KDE3 has, and nothing I know of has been "fixed" on TDE that is open on KDE3. KTTSMgr does not work as installed in either one, and removable media problems are worse in TDE than in KDE3.
A glaring omission in KDE3 that TDE has is for GTK3 app styles. GTK2 will soon be history. There is currently no open bug for this need. TDE is probably as a practical matter unusable for many if not most openSUSE (and Debian Stretch) users due to $SUBJECT. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." That's bad, but builds are working in 42.3 so somebody has got to be updating the buildservice pattern to build for 42.3

Agreed. The gtk3 kcontrol app shouldn't be difficult at all to bring over. All we need is to rename tqt->qt and td->kd (essentially) There isn't much that actually interacts with TDE/tqtinterface other than by name (that was the point). The gtk3 kcontrol essentially just does the same thing the gtk2 control does (theme, font, filechooser settings, etc..) What do you propose the best way to get the build service files under our control for testing? I'm not sure how to branch the entire KDE project and I'd much rather have a local build (virtualized Leap 42.2 and 3 with nothing but the base OS and KDE for building -- to avoid the utter waste of time with the nanny buildservice .spec nags until you are ready to push the package to buildservice. When I want to work on a new package, I don't like spending the first 4 hours jacking with .spec nags -- do that at the end) Thoughts? I'll play with it over the next few weeks and see what I can do
TDE is probably as a practical matter unusable for many if not most openSUSE (and Debian Stretch) users due to $SUBJECT.

Apparently Ilya has still been at work since announcing he was leaving. There's a changelog entry from him less than a month ago in kdenetwork3. Looking at several changelog heads I found none from David Sterba or John Spartan, but David did announce here he set up building for 42.3 in March. ...

I have no competence to offer input for the BS or any other software creation realm. All I can do is run/test packages others build/provide, report, and when I can, triage or wiki. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
