[opensuse-kde3] KDE3

Hi, guys. I am posting in regards of KDE3 support in openSUSE. I have been recently using Windows operating system exclusively and have no plans to move to Linux in foreseeable future. As such I do not have enough time and means to properly maintain KDE:KDE3 for now. David Sterba has pointed out recently that he has some interest in keeping KDE3 packages on track, and if anybody else is interested to step forward, you are welcome. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Hello all, In any case, KDE3 will not die anytime soon :) I started to provide packages for Fedora: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/serghei/kde3/ -- Serghei -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Just curious. I see that KDE3 is available for Leap 42.1. Is it going to be available for Leap 42.2? Thanks! Gianluca On Sun, 12 Jun 2016, Serghei Amelian wrote:

Ilya was openSUSE's KDE3 maintainer, so only if David takes maintainership of all of it, or he with help from others heretofore abstaining, would it be possible. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi Ilya, Thank you for great job you did to keep KDE3 alive in OpenSUSE. I would like to help with the maintenance of KDE3, but not sure how much I can really do. I guess, it is not only OBS for building. I should have some local test bed, correct? My test computer is quite weak (32-bits only, so leap could not be installed, old graphic card also). And I still do, I have a few kde3 users including myself without intentions to move to other desktop environments. Given the age of kde3 there are going to be build breakages, sometimes not easy to fix. An example is kde3-celestia that was removed from factory due to that. I'll review and accept SR that fixes builds and will try to review the build status of kde3, but this has low priority for me. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

I actively maintain the main components of KDE3 (qt3, kdelibs, kdebase, kdepim, kdenetwork, kdegraphics), so they should be ok for long time from now (all gcc-6 issues are solved, etc). https://github.com/serghei At this moment I do some funny experiments, I'm trying to implement a DCOP version on top of DBus instead ICE (Inter-Client Exchange). Also, I dropped the aRts at all and for notifications I implemented a PulseAudio player, so far is working nice, I'm using it in production. On long term I will try to port KDE3 to Qt5. Is not easy task, but I will try :) -- Serghei -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Appreciate the work going in to the "old" KDE3 :) Why isn't the alsa alone enough for sound & noise needs? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

I found that is much easier to work with a high level of API than directly with ALSA. Less work, less bugs. -- Serghei -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Dear Serghei, David and Ilya, I wanted to say thank you for having kept up (Ilya) and continuing to keep up (David and Serghei) the hard work on KDE3. There are too many things that I appreciate about KDE3 and that I would miss in other desktops. For example, besides its stability, I appreciate being able to customize key short cuts, right-click on the top window bar and force the window above others, move windows to other desktops or all desktops, make the panel (kicker) easily disappear or slide to the right. Kicker itself is great. I also like the layout of kterm. I hope that at least the KDE3 core components will survive for a long time. Thank you very much!
