[opensuse-kde3] Hah! 11.4 desktop configured - Despite no kcontrol :)
Ilya, All, I got the kde3 desktop configured in my favorite blueslate theme and the icon sizes set even with kcontrol broken :) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde/opensuse_114-blueslate.jpg http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde/opensuse_114-blueslate-menu.jpg If you want to configure you icon size, etc.. while waiting on kcontrol to be fixed, you can use the following ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals as a reference. Just exit kde then edit your ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals and add the following sections: [DesktopIcons] [Icons] [MainToolbarIcons] [PanelIcons] [SmallIcons] [ToolbarIcons] ** you must NOT be in kde3 when you do this or kdeglobals may be overwritten on exit. (it should preserve you setting, but why chance it) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/11.4/kde3/kdeglobals -- David C. You're just luck or good.... Are you running i686 or x86_64?

HTH :)
That let's me open 'kcmshell kthememanager' -> 'Icons', but kcontrol is still empty: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/kcontrol-empty-2.jpg -- David C. x86_64
It must be a bug in kdeglobals parsing or in the default icon theme! I just opened 'kcmshell kthememanager' and pressed 'Icons' and it didn't crash this time! This is the first time it has worked since I installed 11.4.

The only thing I did was to manually edit ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals and added the icons sections I posted in the start of this thread and manually changed the icon theme.
So I wonder if the icons kcontrol module is crashing while parsing kdeglobals or something similar?
Did you use the default (Crystal) icon theme before? It seems this affects only those who use it. I use DarkGlass_Reworked, maybe because of that I had no such problem. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I think you might be on to something! I did a 'clean' 11.4 install, so I had nothing on the computer at all before I loaded 11.4/kde3. It is the default configuration that has this problem. When I installed 11.3 (where kcontrol works), I updated from 11.1? to 11.3 and I would have already had the icons changed. I don't know how you would test this other than maybe creating another user and copying over a 11.3 ~/.kde directory before starting kde for the first time. I'll give it a go and let you know.... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Did not work. I created a new user, then rsync'ed an 11.3 ~/.kde/share/conf to the new user (default icons: iceglass) and then started kde3 on 11.4. kcontrol is still empty. Next guess? -- David C.
