According to http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde3/2012-09/msg00049.html that answer is yes.
(yast -> sysconfig editor -> Desktop -> Display manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER -> type / choose "kdm3")
Ncurses yast is too clumsy. Besides, if I use startx to get into KDE to use YaST2, it defeats finding the root of the problem, which is why installing kdebase3-kdm with zypper following a minimal X install doesn't result in getting a KDM3 login window on boot, even after manually configuring /etc/sysconfig/displaymanger with DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3". I have little doubt I could reset solver.onlyRequires to false, enable repositorites/KDE3:/KDE3, use startx to get into YaST2 and let it install much I don't want in order to get the little I need to fix this, but I'm more interested in figuring out if there is a broken dep that needs fixing, hence the thread. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I hadn't lately. I don't see how a 1-click would help unless I'm already in X, which I'm not. I don't login with XDM. The 1-click process is terribly unhelpful in determining what I need that I don't have. According to that page, the only requirements seem to already be fulfilled, as it does not explicitly say the repositories/KDE3:/KDE3 repo is required, while early in the page it says: "As of openSUSE 12.1 KDE 3 desktop is included as officially supported part of the distribution", which seems to mean such basics as KDM3 shouldn't require enabling repositories/KDE3:/KDE3. So still the question remains why init 5 presents an XDM login screen instead of KDM3 login screen. 'rpm -e --nodeps xdm' left me with only startx as any way I know how to get into X until KDM3 is working. It seems to me that kdebase3-kdm ought to literally require whatever it technically requires in order to work, and zypper doesn't make that happen, e.g. a bug. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." "I hadn't lately" implies that I did read it, both long ago, and since your reply pointer to it, both of which are in fact the case. Apparently something you see there is not something I recognize as an answer to this thread's major point. It does not say I must enable repositories/KDE3:/KDE3. It does not say I must use the 1-click process. The way I read that page, all requirements have been met. So still the question still remains why init 5 presents an XDM login screen instead of KDM3 login screen after using zypper to install kdebase3-kdm, setting DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3", and rebooting. KDM3 does not seem to create a log somewhere discoverable which could point to the obstacle(s). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." According to that page, ...
To choose kdm3 as the default session manager one needs to write "DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" line to the file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (this can be done with the Yast module etc/sysconfig tool Editor as well). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
This has *not* been a lot of fun. :~( I had none of this trouble that I can recall while 12.2 was Factory. On 2012-09-16 15:51 (GMT-0400) Felix Miata composed:

This became a problem on a second 12.2 system. Adding KDE3 repo didn't help. So I tried: # zypper rm xdm which caused removal of kdebase3 kdebase3-apps kdebase3-kdm kdebase3-session kdebase3-workspace xdm xorg-x11 Then I commented away "solver.onlyRequires = true" in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf and, after looking through KDE3-DEFAULT.ymp for other possible dependent non-deps, did # zypper in kdebase3 kdebase3-apps kdebase3-kdm kdebase3-session kdebase3-workspace xdm xorg-x11 kdebase3-SuSE That resulted in zypper wanting to install 85 "new" packages, well over half of which are 32 bit, on a 64 bit system, and none other than those on the zypper cmdline that look like valid deps of kdm3. So I uncommented onlyRequires before proceeding to reinstall those packages. After some more head scratching I tried another stab at /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. Turns out kdm is no a longer valid alias for kdm3 in 12.2 as it used to be; at least, not as long as onlyRequires is true and system is maintained in a minimalist state. Then I tried, zypper clean -a, removing the KDE3 repo, and zypper dup. That apparently made DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" and invalid gave me xdm back as kdm replacement. :-p Renabling KDE3 repo and another zypper dup, and KDM came back. Summary, to have KDM3 as login manager requires KDE3 repo enabled, begging another question, why are there any KDE3 packages in OSS instead of only in the KDE3 repo? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
