[opensuse-kde3] kpowersave in openSUSE 12.2
Hi! I have always used kpowersave in KDE3 to check the battery status of my laptop. However, in openSUSE 12.2 it is not working. I have also installed the haldaemon (hal-0.5.14) from the KDE3 repository and started it through yast. However, kpowersave is still not able to read the battery status or provide any other service. I'm also not entirely sure whether hald is running properly `/etc/init.d/haldaemon status` returns: redirecting to systemctl haldaemon.service - LSB: HAL is a daemon for managing information about the hardware on the system Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/haldaemon) Active: active (exited) since Mon, 25 Feb 2013 18:09:53 -0800; 9min ago Process: 7803 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/haldaemon stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 7813 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/haldaemon start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/haldaemon.service Feb 25 18:09:53 alseid haldaemon[7813]: Starting HAL daemon..done Thanks! Maybe, I should re-phrase the question: What alternative do you have to kpowersave in KDE 3.5 on openSUSE 12.2? Thanks, Gianluca On Mon, 25 Feb 2013, Gianluca Interlandi wrote:

I have kpowersave working well in 12.2 on a laptop. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
It doesn't work for me. It says that "no information about hardware is available". It seems that I have problems with the haldaemon. `/etc/init.c/haldaemon start` returns "done". However `/etc/init.c/haldaemon status` returns "unused". Also, `ps` does not show that hald is running. Any suggestions how I can make hald run? It seems that a properly running haldaemon is necessary for kpowersave to work. Thanks, Gianluca On Wed, 27 Feb 2013, Ilya Chernykh wrote:

Check with Yast whether hald service is running. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
Yes, hald service is running acording to Yast. However, there is no "hald" process displayed by `ps` and typing `/etc/init.c/haldaemon status` returns "unused". Could it be that the haldaemon is conflicting with some other daemon? Gianluca On Wed, 27 Feb 2013, Ilya Chernykh wrote:

Ok, SOLVED! I found the solution here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/prin... For some reason the folder /etc/hal was empty. What I had to do was to create a link to /usr/share/hal/: cd /etc/hal ln -s /usr/share/hal/* ./ /etc/init.d/haldaemon stop /etc/init.d/haldaemon start Now, hald is running and so is kpowersave! Meanwhile, I also found an alternative to kpowersave that uses upowerd, batti-gtk: http://code.google.com/p/batti-gtk/ It's fun but not all the functionality of kpowersave. So, now that my hald is running I don't need it any more. Gianluca On Wed, 27 Feb 2013, Ilya Chernykh wrote:

Neither did I until now. What version of hald are you running? What do you get with `rpm -qa | grep hal` ? Gianluca On Thu, 28 Feb 2013, Ilya Chernykh wrote:

Now, hald is running and so is kpowersave!

I thought that hal was a prerequisite for kpowersave to work. Can you please explain more? How did you achieve that they are not linked? Are you saying that /etc/hal is empty in your installation or that you have an actual folder named "fdi" in your /etc/hal? Gianluca On Thu, 28 Feb 2013, Ilya Chernykh wrote:

I noticed that the style of some GTK widgets changed after openSUSE 11.3. For example the navigation arrows in Firefox and other programs based on GTK+ were in green. In versions starting 11.4 and later they were replaced by a grey arrow. Any idea in which path those widgets are located and how I can change back to the older style? I have already gone through /usr/share/icons and /usr/share/themes but I can't find them there.
