one of the proposals i considered as a solution to my kmail problem was gmail. so i opened up a gmail account, fed all of my existing accounts to it and it worked. But I hate the interface, the layout, the gui, i hate everything except the functionality! so i decided to keep gmail, BUT, i tried my tired old kde3 kmail as a front end to it. it only required me to delete my old accounts, then i added my google account, played with the firewall to allow ports 995,465 and 587 thru, and VOILA, my kde3-kmail works just fine again, in suse 12.3!!!!
