[heroes] another attempt
All, with no real solution for the character set issue within reach, as a sort of last desperate way out, I have created a copy of the forums with the code+data from Provo. It took a little fiddling, but it seems to be running: http://osforums.jessen.ch (it was quicker for me to do it locally, and no need to bother Lars). It's running on Leap 42.3 with php5 and mariadb 10.2.31, login+register do not yet work, but it looks like everything is being displayed correctly. Which is a major step forward. I would suggest you take a look, see if you can spot any issues - I think some links may still refer to forums.o.o, I'm not sure. I think we should be able to run this on an SLES12 machine in Nürnberg, import a new database and then switch the forums over. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.6°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I think we should be able to run this on an SLES12 machine in Nürnberg, import a new database and then switch the forums over. Looks good to me. Checked EN, NL, DE and the encoding seems to be OK.

As I already mentioned on IRC two days ago - I'm afraid it isn't that easy. Per's temporary instance looked good on the first page, but not on the last page. You can even see this on the live instance in Provo: The first page of one of the german subforums looks good: https://forums.opensuse.org/forumdisplay.php/847-Installation-Administration but old posts have broken encoding: https://forums.opensuse.org/forumdisplay.php/847-Installation-Administration... This means the database contains a mix of encodings, probably depending on the date. Fixing that will be funny[tm], see my mail from tuesday for details. If someone knows a script to fix the encoding in half of a database, please speak up ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz --

I concur. I do seem to recall that there was an encoding change a few years back as well. -- Jim Henderson Please keep on-topic replies on the list so everyone benefits -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I actually took that to mean my temp setup was good. I mean, I even managed to replicate the problems. :-)

I wholeheartedly agree with Gertjan, Malcom and Jim - trying to fix those issues now is scope-creep. Let me quickly summarise where I believe we are currently at: (a) our vBulletin 4.2.2 cannot be easily upgraded to vBulletin 5.6.0. The upgrade process works as such, including database load it takes about three hours, but the result is not usable. My guess - possibly due to our database not being quite "clean" wrt character sets. (b) our vBulletin 4.2.2 can be run on Leap42.3, as my PoC shows. The effort involved was mostly importing the database, and putting the software together. Personally, also considering how much time I can dedicate to this, I don't think we have any chance of resolving (a), certainly not in a reasonable time frame. Instead I propose we implement option (b) in Nürnberg, possibly on SLES12 which is still supported. (b) also takes two-three hours to do, but still leaves the issue of user authentication. This might however be even easier to do, as we are re-using the setup from Provo. (ie. no need to reinvent the wheel). With (b), we would have a running forum in Nürnberg supported by the Heroes, meaning de-coupling from MF-IT and leaving us ample time to consider what to do next. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.6°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org
