[opensuse-gnome] GNOME Team Meeting
Ladies & Germs it has been far too long since the GNOME Team actually put their heads together and talked about what is going on in the garden. As such regular meetings are re-starting, but with a slight difference - it will be monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1400UTC, for localised times please see[0]. That means the next meeting will be held this Tuesday, 18th May 2010, in the garden (otherwise known as #opensuse-gnome on Freenode). The Agenda is pretty simple and can be added to on the wiki[1]. For those curious it will kind of follow the lines of: 1. openSUSE GNOME Status 1.1 Packaging 1.2 Bugs 1.3 Q & A 2. Upstream GNOME Status 2.1 What's New 2.2 Bugs 2.3 Q & A 3. General Q & A So please come buy the garden, pull up a chair and crack a cold one open. Join in the fun and add anything you need to the agenda. 0 - http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=18&month=5&year=201... 1 - http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Meetings/20100518 -- Andrew Wafaa IRC: FunkyPenguin. I think its a smashing idea to restart meetings, and I especially like that it will be reduced to once a month. At the openSUSE Conference, we talked about what it was we needed to to jumpstart interest in openSUSE-GNOME and how to get people interested in coming to the meetings. I fear that the agenda you've laid out doesn't address that very well. Looking back to how I "accidentally" ended up in GNOME meetings, I saw a meeting announcement by JPR, and I thought hmm.. Here's a chance to find out new stuff about GNOME. I wanted to educate myself, and thought it would be more of a presentation-style meeting. I was wrong but luckily, I stuck around. :-) (I see a comment coming from Andy now about the horrors now that I'm around.) I would suggest that the meetings be thematic. Back in the beginning, we used to invite people from different projects to come and talk about stuff and answer questions from general users. Those meetings had some relatively decent attendance. Before we start talking nuts and bolts in these meetings, which intimidate those who aren't knowledgeable in this area, we need to talk about general interests and build from there. And who knows, you might be able to snag a new techie out of someone who initially didn't think he or she had what it takes to get under the hood. Make them on Saturday, so that someone that has interest can actually attend :)

I guess that change in agenda can help, but IRC on work days locks out people that have strict company rules, which is IMO majority. -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I'm not sure I am convinced of that. Weekends are *very* quiet on IRC compared to weekdays. I see almost no activity in most of the channels I log into, except for #suse support channel. There is also the challenge that key players on a team won't be able to make it on weekends because they're off work. And while I'm not a paid worker, I certainly won't commit my weekends on a regular basis, especially during summer months when I am working outside around the house all the time. However, in theory, all meeting times we use are "experimental." There is never a perfect formula for the best time, and I would endorse anyone who wants to attempt to organize a meeting on a weekend, whether it is -gnome or something else. Even for those of us who can't make it, most of us leave the IRC logged in, so we can always go back in our logs and see what happened in meetings we did not attend. I still have my doubts that a weekend meeting would get a "majority" attendance, but someone should be willing to try and see what happens. You never know! :-) Bryen

I know that, and it is not good. It should be exactly the opposite.

I guess that is the reason for everything being quiet. When key players are not there, you can't solve anything before Monday anyway.

We have either regional meetings, which will not succeed because almost all key players are in the Europe, or use one day (24 hours) meetings on a mail list or even better forums, as they allow moderation. The interface is not perfect, but it is better then time zone problems.

Not sure who the key players are, but in general, Dominique, Magnus and I are still monitoring things on the week-end, and we're also doing some development. So I wouldn't say we wait for Monday in general. But we do have a life outside of openSUSE, and week-ends are usually a good time to enjoy this life :-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

As was mentioned by Bryen the weekends are very quiet on IRC and the mailing list, but that doesn't mean we can't do something on the weekend. The chances of me being able to participate are very slim as I have children etc, but why should that stop the community from taking part? Having a meeting time that will suit everyone is never going to happen, which is why I thought a monthly meet would be better as it gives people enough time to check the previous meeting log and add their comments/questions for the next one. I certainly see us having additional meetings through the month once we start getting more momentum, just not yet.
I fear that the agenda you've laid out doesn't address that very well.

Corporate firewalls are always an issue, but there are suitable web frontends available for IRC now. Regards, Andy -- Andrew Wafaa IRC: FunkyPenguin. PGP: 0x3A36312F openSUSE: Get It, Discover It, Create It at http://www.opensuse.org

I appreciate what you're saying, and I completely agree that we need to engage the community better. The issue is you had your chance to object and you missed it ;-P As I mentioned previously, this agenda is just an initial one that we can build on. As it has been so long since we actually had a meeting I think we need to all know what is going on. We can then discuss how to better engage the community.
Looking back to how I "accidentally" ended up in GNOME meetings, I saw a meeting announcement by JPR, and I thought hmm.. Here's a chance to find out new stuff about GNOME. What you mean like how you linger like a bad smell? One of my aims is to try and get the GNOME community back to the same level it was back in the 11.0/11.1 cycles. We seem to have lost our way somewhat and we need to just get on and do it.
I would suggest that the meetings be thematic. Back in the beginning, we used to invite people from different projects to come and talk about stuff and answer questions from general users. Those meetings had some relatively decent attendance.

Please feel free to add your comments etc to the agenda, they are perfectly valid and are worthy of discussion. There are many things we need to do, but we need to start small and then grow. Big +1 on the last part. Let's not try to over-engineer our meetings: that's one reason we failed to the meetings again; we wanted to have specific topics, but that didn't happen. It's fine to not have a good idea of how the meeting will be, and I'm sure we'll make it good anyway! For the next one, we'll already have a clearer picture of what should be in the agenda. Ladies & Germs it has been far too long since the GNOME Team actually put their heads together and talked about what is going on in the garden.
