[opensuse-gnome] Crash when switching user with gnome 3.8
Dear All, after the upgrade to Gnome 3.8, in my home desktop system I started to notice a serious problem when switching users. If I log in as a user, then 'Switch User' to allow another user to login, and then switch back to the first user (either by selecting again the 'Switch User' entry in the menu, or going to the correct tty with the keyboard), I see a message saying that something went wrong, that all extensions have been turned off, and offering me to logout (I am not using any extension). I tried to diagnose the source of the problem, and it seems that GDM is crashing. I see the following messages in /var/log/messages (notice the failed asserts for xdm): 2013-04-21T02:48:22.765606+02:00 linux-3xop dbus-daemon[554]: dbus[554]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit' 2013-04-21T02:48:22.766352+02:00 linux-3xop dbus[554]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit' 2013-04-21T02:48:23.363053+02:00 linux-3xop polkitd[623]: Registered Authentication Agent for unix-session:5 (system bus name :1.144 [/usr/bin/gnome-shell], object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_US.UTF-8) 2013-04-21T02:48:23.503771+02:00 linux-3xop gnome-session[2003]: Entering running state 2013-04-21T02:48:24.118099+02:00 linux-3xop gnome-keyring-daemon[2000]: keyring alias directory: /home/apaterna/.local/share/keyrings 2013-04-21T02:48:24.136829+02:00 linux-3xop goa[2152]: secret_password_lookup_sync() returned NULL [goautils.c:210, goa_utils_lookup_credentials_sync()] 2013-04-21T02:48:24.137199+02:00 linux-3xop goa[2152]: /org/gnome/OnlineAccounts/Accounts/account_1366456332: Setting AttentionNeeded to TRUE because EnsureCredentials() failed with: No credentials found in the keyring (goa-error-quark, 4) [goadaemon.c:1085, ensure_credentials_cb()] 2013-04-21T02:48:25.078198+02:00 linux-3xop goa[2152]: secret_password_lookup_sync() returned NULL [goautils.c:210, goa_utils_lookup_credentials_sync()] 2013-04-21T02:48:32.871663+02:00 linux-3xop goa[2152]: last message repeated 2 times 2013-04-21T02:48:32.871618+02:00 linux-3xop gdm-password]: pam_unix(gdm-password:session): session closed for user vmariani 2013-04-21T02:48:33.085460+02:00 linux-3xop kernel: [ 358.850720] mission-control[1795]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f58bf375cb0 sp 00007fff1d63b9b8 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.3600.0[7f58bf33a000+fc000] 2013-04-21T02:48:33.320474+02:00 linux-3xop xdm[555]: GLib-GObject: g_object_ref: assertion `object->ref_count > 0' failed 2013-04-21T02:48:33.320648+02:00 linux-3xop xdm[555]: GLib-GObject: g_object_unref: assertion `object->ref_count > 0' failed 2013-04-21T02:48:33.321903+02:00 linux-3xop xdm[555]: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.000510 seconds 2013-04-21T02:48:41.666463+02:00 linux-3xop systemd-logind[532]: Removed session 4. Probably before GDM, there is another thing crashing (a bunch of asserts in gdm are rathyer 'normal', when it shuts down to hand over to the user session. Can you get the session log of the user (it should be in systemd-journalctl) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org
Dear Dominique, please disregard my comments about the low activity in the other email, now, I just thought I was doing something wrong by reporting bugs here. I have to wait until I get home to my multi-user desktop system that I share with my wife to send you the log. In the meantime I created a dummy user on my computer at work (also running OpenSUSE with GNOME 3.8), and noticed that this does not happen at work. I am alsousing an nvidia card here, but a different one... However, I am starting to think that it could be X-related.... I will do some more tests this evening and report... I've tested switching user on my three openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 GNOME 3.8 boxes; one nVidia [nouveau], one ATI, one Intel. It seems to work on all three. -- Adam Tauno Williams <mailto:awilliam@whitemice.org> GPG D95ED383 Systems Administrator, Python Developer, LPI / NCLA -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org
Dear Adam, thanks for taking time to test. I tried again this morning and it crashed. Now, I am trying again to diagnose the problem, which does not always happen. Here is what I did: 1) Logged in as user 1 2) Selected 'Switch User', it opens a new gdm scrren on tty3 (tty2 was already opened by me manually) 3) Login as user2 4) Selected 'Switch User', it opens a new gdm screen on tty4 5) Go to tty3, using ctrl+alt+f3, and notice that the shell for user 2 has crashed. I took a snapshot of the systemd-journal at every step. Here is a diff of the snapshots between 4 and 5: < -- Logs begin at Wed, 2013-05-01 11:20:00 CEST, end at Wed, 2013-05-01 11:26:14 CEST. -- ---

It is clear that the 'Log Out' message comes from the fact that the gnome shell has crashed. I think this is the moment where it has crashed: polkitd[625]: Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-session:5 (system bus name :1.155, object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_US.UTF-8) (disconnected from bus)
May 01 11:26:58 linux-3xop.site gnome-session[1899]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-shell.desktop' killed by signal 5 May 01 11:26:58 linux-3xop.site gnome-session[1899]: WARNING: App 'gnome-shell.desktop' respawning too quickly
So, I think the problem might be related to polkitd. Actually, this problem has been reported on other distros too, for other versions of gnome. For example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/policykit-1-gnome/+bug/970897 However, I have no idea how to fix the problem Valerio -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org
Still trying to debug the issue. Reading this thread: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638924 made me think that the "Unregistered Authentication" error that I get might be due to X crashing. So I played the same game with looking at the log at every step, but this time I focused on the Xorg log. When the gnome shell crashes, this is what I see: 341a342,350

Dear Adam, thanks for taking time to test. I tried again this morning and it crashed. Now, I am trying again to diagnose the problem, which does not always happen. Here is what I did:
1) Logged in as user 1 2) Selected 'Switch User', it opens a new gdm scrren on tty3 (tty2 was already opened by me manually) 3) Login as user2 4) Selected 'Switch User', it opens a new gdm screen on tty4 5) Go to tty3, using ctrl+alt+f3, and notice that the shell for user 2 has crashed.
I took a snapshot of the systemd-journal at every step. Here is a diff of the snapshots between 4 and 5:

It is clear that the 'Log Out' message comes from the fact that the gnome shell has crashed. I think this is the moment where it has crashed:
polkitd[625]: Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-session:5 (system bus name :1.155, object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_US.UTF-8) (disconnected from bus)
For example:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/policykit-1-gnome/+bug/970897
However, I have no idea how to fix the problem

As you can see, it looks like the dbus-daemon exits throwing an exception, this causes the rejection of dus messages, and this in turns crashes the gnome shell BTW I tried the 3.8.1 iso images and I cannot reproduce the issue, so this must be related to updating 3.6 to 3.8.1 This is becoming supremely annoying as at home me and my wife switch user continuously during the day, and the 2nd or 3rd switch triggers the crash. Dear All, still me. Working on X configuration did not help me to find the problem.
Thank you for your help

Dear All,
after the upgrade to Gnome 3.8, in my home desktop system I started to notice a serious problem when switching users.
I see the following messages in /var/log/messages (notice the failed asserts for xdm):
Probably before GDM, there is another thing crashing (a bunch of asserts in gdm are rathyer 'normal', when it shuts down to hand over to the user session.
Can you get the session log of the user (it should be in systemd-journalctl)

Still trying to debug the issue. Reading this thread: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638924 made me think that the "Unregistered Authentication" error that I get might be due to X crashing. So I played the same game with looking at the log at every step, but this time I focused on the Xorg log. When the gnome shell crashes, this is what I see: 341a342,350

I observed this error both when using the proprietary nvidia driver and the open source nouveau driver.
I also noticed that the session for the first user opens on tty7, but the one for the second opens on tty2, not on tty8. Is this ok?
I would really like to get to the bottom of the problem as user switching is essential for me on the desktop. Please let me help if I can provide more information to help with the debugging Thank you for your help
