Dear All, still me.
Working on X configuration did not help me to find the problem.
I have been also looking in the /var/log/messages file, where I see
this suspicious messages:

As you can see, it looks like the dbus-daemon exits throwing an
exception, this causes the rejection of dus messages, and this in
turns crashes the gnome shell
BTW I tried the 3.8.1 iso images and I cannot reproduce the issue, so
this must be related to updating 3.6 to 3.8.1
This is becoming supremely annoying as at home me and my wife switch
user continuously during the day, and the 2nd or 3rd switch triggers
the crash.
If I cannot find the reason for this I think I will have to
reluctantly switch to another distro (or DE). Grr, if someone has any idea...
