[opensuse-gnome] GNOME:STABLE/GNOME:Community
Just wondered how stable (for want of a better word) GNOME:STABLE is? I've been unable to switch cleanly from stock 10.2 + updates to G:S, probably mainly due to the prefix switch (/opt/gnome -> /usr). -- Michel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

YaST would choke on gnome-mime-data. If I uninstall it, upgrade most of the GNOME packages and then reinstall, I'll still end up with about 60+ MB of things in /opt/gnome, and the GNOME installation is broken (slab and some menu packages were still not upgraded, last time I checked). Seems like the safe option, when shifting to G:S, is to do the upgrade when using the KDE desktop, and to begin by removing the old /opt/gnome stuff completely. -- Michel

Just tried doing a clean install with KDE only, adding the GNOME:Stable repo and then installing GNOME (Patterns: GNOME Base System and GNOME Desktop Environment). Conclusion: you don't want to do this. I get a desktop with no panel, the icon theme is messed up, and after switching back to KDE I find that Firefox's KDE-esque theme is gone. Also, helix-banshee does not work (podcast plugin doesn't work, and I had to symlink /opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 to /usr/bin/gconftool-2 to even get it to install) Considering GNOME:Stable is only available for 10.1 and 10.2 anyway, I'd say it's probably not a good idea to target G:C at it. There's 145 MB's worth of stuff installed under /opt/gnome too. -- Michel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Just fixed. Michel, Can you test this now? I think this proposed change has an impact on a number of recent discussions on the list (including the general discussion on the purpose of G:C - if it's based on G:S, its purpose doesn't change depending on the product). -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org GNOME for openSUSE: http://software.opensuse.org/download/GNOME:/ Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/in -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Seems to work better (have not actually tried to go through; will do it from the office later since the network connection there is much faster). Pidgin-related packages will need to be updated (should it be removed from G:S and maintained in G:C exclusively?) Also, libopensync will probably need to target G:S as well (Evolution plugin is compiled against older version of Evo). And what to do with KDE-esque packages like Amarok? -- Michel michel@hitchens:~> sudo smart upgrade Loading cache... Confirm changes? (Y/n):

While the installation conflict is now resolved, after installation the GNOME:STABLE desktop is as broken as ever. - Starting from GDM: There was an error loading the theme GDM-SuSE Could not recognize the image file format for file '/usr/share/gdm/themes/GDM-Su SE/Background.jpeg' That background file is standard JPEG! And then the GNOME splash screen is just blank, none of the icons are loaded, the theme is some default Raleigh-esque thing that looks mid-90s, and NetworkManager is not working: The NetworkManager applet could not find some required resources. It cannot cont inue. SLAB menu is empty too. /opt/gnome still has about 30+ MB of stuff (some of it are mine, total is about 36MB), including some that should really be in GNOME:STABLE. For example, /opt/gnome/bin has the following: application-browser gconftool-2 liferea-bin control-center gidlgen tomboy desktop-file-install gnome-xgl-info tomboy-panel desktop-file-validate gnome-xgl-settings update-desktop-database drivel gnome-xgl-switch valac f-spot kino vapigen f-spot-import liferea xchat-gnome f-spot-sqlite-upgrade liferea-add-feed We are only less than two months away from openSUSE 10.3. The testing resources is not there to justify a rebase of G:C (from the status of G:S 10.2 packages I'm guessing I am the only packager that has even tried it?).. How many of G:C packages won't build against an older GNOME? It seems standard operating procedure for me to gradually decrease support for older releases, rather than having to backport more and more stuff -- a testing nightmare, as both developer and userbase for the older releases dwindle. Going back *yet again* to a stock 10.2 + G:C GNOME setup.. -- Michel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
Stuff in /opt/gnome:
tomboy gnome-xgl-info tomboy-panel gnome-xgl-settings gnome-xgl-switch f-spot f-spot-import xchat-gnome f-spot-sqlite-upgrade
These certainly are from repositories other than G:S (some from G:C) - others in your list may well be too. In fact, I'd be surprised if anything from G:S was still installing to /opt/gnome. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org GNOME for openSUSE: http://software.opensuse.org/download/GNOME:/ Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/in -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

tomboy, yes. That one is not a big deal. But application-browser control-center desktop-file-* gnome-xgl-* kino update-desktop-database are from openSUSE 10.2 (i.e. not replaced in G:S yet) Worse, gconftool-2 is actually from G:S !
In fact, I'd be surprised if anything from G:S was still installing to /opt/gnome. I was surprised indeed.

(and wishing that we don't tell people, in the non-developer mailing list (opensuse@opensuse.org) to just try upgrading to G:S, because it's frankly not ready) -- Michel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
