Ciaran, can we distribute the b43-openfwwf package "bona fide" ? -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/306619
Feature changed by: Karl Cheng (qantas94heavy) Feature #306619, revision 24 Title: open firmware for some broadcom wifi cards openSUSE-11.2: Rejected by Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) reject date: 2010-11-15 09:46:54 reject reason: Not done in time for openSUSE 11.2. Priority Requester: Important openSUSE-11.3: Rejected by Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) reject date: 2010-11-15 09:47:47 reject reason: Not done in time for openSUSE 11.3. Priority Requester: Important - openSUSE-11.4: New + openSUSE-11.4: Rejected by Karl Cheng (qantas94heavy) + reject reason: Not done in time for openSUSE 11.4. Priority Requester: Important + openSUSE Distribution: New + Priority + Requester: Desirable Requested by: Mariusz Fik (fisiu) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: It could be fine to ship openSUSE 11.2 with open firmware for broadcom wifi cards. Then, some cards will work out-of-box. For this chips currently unsupported we still have "install_bcm43xx_firmware". Known supported boards until now: 4306, 4311(rev1), 4318 and 4320 http://www.ing.unibs.it/openfwwf/ (http://www.ing.unibs.it/openfwwf/) Relations: - Include brcm80211 driver/firmware into openSUSE 11.4 (feature/id: 311196) - Include firmware for wireless broadcom devices (even non-oss) like Microsoft true type fonts installer (feature/id: 311198) Discussion: #1: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) (2009-07-10 12:13:31) Jiri, can we add this? #6: Axel Braun (docb) (2009-07-13 23:02:51) Open firmware is as well available for some prism chipsets, see prism54. org #9: Drew Kwashnak (dragonbite) (2010-01-08 17:28:30) Fedora 12 includes OpenFWWF and my broadcom BCM 4309 was detected out of the box. Also, it has had a better connection than the regular method (fwcutter) and comparable or superios to Windows all on the same box. I have not had a dropped connection yet, while the fwcutter does every so often. This would greatly enhance the "out-of-the-box" experience as well as promote the open source options over the current proprietary method. Also agree, the existing method can be in place for those that are not supported. #10: Mariusz Fik (fisiu) (2010-03-23 14:30:11) Any chance to include it into openSUSE 11.3? #11: Rastislav Krupansky (ra100) (2010-03-23 21:51:28) If OpenFWWF works "out-of-the-box" and it has better connection than b43, i vote for this feature. Why isn´t yet included in openSUSE? We have to still use "install_bcm43xx_firmware" command for working wifi, and i don´t know, whether there is progress in bug 554823 - automate b43-fwcutter. #12: Mariusz Fik (fisiu) (2010-03-24 04:25:46) I did an initial package for openSUSE 11.2 and Factory. It's available in my home repo in noarch: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Fisiu/ (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Fisiu/) Package is named 'b43-openfwwf'. b43-tools is needed only to build firmware so it's not published. All suggestions are welcome :) If You think this package is good enough I'll make a request for Factory oss. #13: Vladimir Botka (vbotka) (2010-03-30 11:41:09) I have accepted the packages prliminary into the driver:wireless. The license states GPL v.2 . The issue is tracked also in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=554823#c13 .
