Feature changed by: akash vishwakarma (vish_99) Feature #317761, revision 7 Title: Provide java 8 packages - Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed + Package Wishlist: Rejected by akash vishwakarma (vish_99) + reject reason: openjdk already present in official repo and official + oracle java cannot be provided as asked due to license issues. Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Martin Schröder (oneiros) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Java 8 was released in 2014-03; Oracle will remove normal free support of Java 7 in 2015-03. Currently we have only packages for Java 7; if you want Java 8, you have to wrangle with rpms from Oracle (see also https://features.opensuse.org/314729). Since we apparently can't redristribute Oracle's rpms, can we either create or own packages (it's nearly all from OpenJDK anyway) or create packages that pull in Oracle's and configure them? Relations: - Include oracle java JRE installer rpm in non-oss repo (feature/id: 314729) - java development toolchain (feature/id: 310346) - Java 8 package (obs/package: http://software.opensuse.org/package/java-1_8_0-sun) - Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap (url: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html) - OpenJDK 8 for Ubuntu (url: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1297065) - Announcement of OpenJDK 8 beta (url: https://lists.launchpad.net/openjdk/msg09995.html) Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Sometime in the future (2015 or 2016) users will want to run Java8 programs. Having to jump through Oracle's hoops will make it hard for them to do this. Discussion: #1: Martin Schröder (oneiros) (2014-08-14 21:47:08) For those who care (apparently nobody from Suse read this entry): There are packages for OpenJDK Java 8 in factory (http://software.opensuse.org/package/java-1_8_0-openjdk). -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/317761
