[opensuse-factory] After update to KDE 5.4, the workspace hangs at startup at 90%
Last night I updated KDE from 5.3 to 5.4 on my 64-bit Tumbleweed system. After restarting the KDE workspace now hangs at startup with the progress indicator at about 90%. In the systemd journal I noticed this kde5 entry, but I don't know if it is related to the hang: QT: Session management error: networkIdsList argument is NULL Anyone know what is going on? Thanks in advance. Stephan van den Akker -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

The problem doesn't vanish when I switch off the splash screen. Now the freeze happens on the login screen. 2015-09-12 10:23 GMT+02:00 Michael Hirmke <mh@mike.franken.de>:

ok. Do you have a custom background for the login screen? If so can you try to switch it back to the default background? Bye. Michael.

do you have any autostart scripts or programs? Does it hang forever or only for a long time? Do you have any entries in the journal/logs? Can you try to disable the compositor when the situation occurs (Shift+Alt+F12) and reenable it? Bye. Michael.

@ Michael, - Other than Knetworkmanager and some other stuff in the System tray (possible Konversation) I'm don't have any non-standard autostart scripts or programs. - It hangs forever (tried overnight) - The output of journalctr contains 1 kded5 entry around the time of the hang: QT: Session management error: networkIdsList argument is NULL It als contains two error messages by pulse audio. - Pressing Shift+Alt+F12 does nothing @ Sean, - Deleted all plasma* files doesn't solve the problem 2015-09-13 13:18 GMT+02:00 Michael Hirmke <mh@mike.franken.de>:

Hi Stephan, Lets try something crazy :) Can you remove the kactivities5 package (only this one !!!). you can easily do it from a root konsole and then use the command "rpm -e --nodeps kactivities5" Do this before you login in to the KDE session ! Afterwards try to login again and see if now the desktop loads. Hi Stephan, Hmm, that is strange. I know that the kactivities daemon causes issues in the past and from time to time still is preventing plasmashell to start. Removing this package should remove that daemon. Is there any process that takes up cpu ? Which are the 10 top processes that are running while plasma is hanging ?? I haven't seen the beginning of this thread, but I assume you checked ~/.xsession-errors-:0 for any strange errors ? I saw this on one of the laptops overhere, but just once, after a reboot everything was back to normal. Haven't reported anything since a bumblebee install was done in the same session so I did not know what to blame yet. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. Try deleting plasma* files in your ~/.config folder. Sometimes they break log-in and going back to defaults will fix the problem. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Oh damn, it was just an idea. I had an issue with login, similar to yours but not as terminal, earlier this year when it was getting to 85% extremely quickly then taking about 30 seconds to do the last 15%. I couldn't find any issues in the logs either. It looks as if some programs aren't perhaps logging as well as they should. One day it just went away and now it works fast all the way to the desktop.

It's Intel with the open source drivers. Anyway, IceWM still works, the system reacts to me pressing Alt-Ctrl-Backspace so I'm pretty sure it's not X or the video drivers that cause the problem. 2015-09-13 16:31 GMT+02:00 Knurpht - Gertjan Lettink <knurpht@opensuse.org>:
