running lyx, and its asking for packages...
lyx is asking for some adding packages, but I don't see what rpm might contain them: Warning: Document class not available ---------------------------------------- The selected document class Article (Standard Class) requires external files that are not available. The document class can still be used, but the document cannot be compiled until the following prerequisites are installed: article.cls Book (Standard Class) book.cls KOMA-Script Book scrbook.cls fancyhdr.sty enumitem.sty Also notes that I didn't install: latex pplatex platex latex2e' but have no idea which I would need or want (though I see packages with those names, no idea which I would want). Any idea how to find these packages amongst the repo rpms? Thanks!

Hi
Texlive packages.....
Are those 5 files included in all of the packages returned or what? It can't mean I need all of those packages to install those 5 items can it? On 2021/04/08 15:59, Malcolm wrote:

Hi Texlive packages.....
That search is looking for substrings, so you get all flavors of articles and books. If you want e.g. article.cls, do: sudo zypper in --no-recommends -C 'tex(article.cls)' It's s 202 new packages here, 2606 with recommends :) Greetings, Stephan -- Lighten up, just enjoy life, smile more, laugh more, and don't get so worked up about things. If someone is trying to install some set of packages to "compile(?)" the document, how would they have any clue as to which of the 202 or 2606 packages they want to install? Without some idea of what one is installing it seems pointless to give them 2808 options. At least in MS-Word, it gives you the option to apply a theme to a document to see how it looks, but I think the option to select themes is more or less of the variety set into classes, like basic, professional, etc. Even classes like floral, or colorful, etc, might be helpful. There's also some options where you can see a preview, but to work with the theme or doctype, it does an install-on-demand from the initial network install location. But for someone who doesn't already know what they want, how could they pick from over 2000 choices?

LyX assumes that you install a texlive distribution almost completely, i.e. a couple of thousand packages and not just a few hundred. LyX "recommends" them instead of "requires", which gives you the opportunity to install the texlive distribution from https://tug.org/texlive/ It does not work with just a few packages. LyX is not a wordprocessor like Word or LibreOffice and has a learning curve. Under help there is a tutorial. Regards, Cor

I installed LyX so long ago that I don't remember, but the installation of LyX should have recommended to install the 2606 packages. Look, trying on a 15.2 machine that doesn't have it installed: Isengard:~ # zypper install --dry-run lyx Retrieving repository 'Packman Repository' metadata .................................................[done] ... Yes, it would be nice to see somewhere how each document type looks like. It is possible to try them, though, but it is involved, takes time. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
