[opensuse-factory] Virtualbox: Leap 15.1 client on TW host does not scale
Hi, I have an up-to-date TW , and freshly installed Leap 15.1 in virtualbox on it. Virtualbox guest tools installed. Problem: Screen resolution of the Leap-client cant be changed. This was fixed with https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1132439 but seems to be back. Can anyone else confirm this? Yes I can, but I have not yet found a solution. The easiest work-around I have found so far is to download VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.12.iso and run the Linux script from there. It will give you a warning that you should ignore. Of course, this should not be needed. While I try to find the cause of this failure, please create a new bug so that there is something to track. I found the problem. VB now creates a new Linux machine with the virtual graphics controller of VMSVGA. If that is changed to VBoxVGA, then screen resizing will work the old way. VMSVGA is supposed to be better, but it obviously has a bug. I will be pushing a change so that openSUSE VMs are created with VBoxVGA. TLDR: I had no problem using VMSVGA, but I needed to run VBoxClient --vmsvga manually on the guest (I believe that should be run at boot time) Wolfgang, sorry for not answering on the other thread... but today I got time to do new tests. My host machine has openSUSE Leap 15.1 and VirtualBox 6.0.12 (latest for Leap 15.1). I created a fresh new VirtualBox VM, named it "openSUSE" and didn't change defaults (for instance, the Graphics Controller is VMSVGA). I downloaded and inserted the following ISO image as a LiveDVD: https://osdn.net/projects/kamarada/storage/15.1/images/iso/Linux_Kamarada-15... (it is based on Leap 15.1 and comes with virtualbox-guest-tools and virtualbox-guest-x11 installed out of the box) I started the VM. The vboxadd-service was already running in the guest: # systemctl status vboxadd-service Warning: vboxadd-service.service changed on disk. Run 'systemctl daemon-reload' to reload units. ● vboxadd-service.service - Start/Stop VirtualBox Guest Linux module Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/vboxadd-service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled) Active: active (exited) since Wed 2019-09-25 13:26:18 EDT; 9min ago Process: 875 ExecStart=/usr/lib/virtualbox/vboxadd-service start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Main PID: 875 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Tasks: 8 (limit: 4915) CGroup: /system.slice/vboxadd-service.service └─954 /usr/sbin/VBoxService --pidfile /var/run/vboxadd-service.sh Sep 25 13:26:18 kamarada-pc systemd[1]: Started Start/Stop VirtualBox Guest Linux module. Sep 25 13:26:19 kamarada-pc vboxadd-service[875]: vboxadd-service.sh: Starting VirtualBox Guest Addition service. Sep 25 13:26:19 kamarada-pc vboxadd-service.sh[888]: Starting VirtualBox Guest Addition service. Sep 25 13:26:19 kamarada-pc vboxadd-service.sh[953]: VirtualBox Guest Addition service started. (probably it was started during boot time, I didn't start it manually) I enabled the Bidirectional Shared Clipboard. It worked. Then I resized the VM window, but the guest resolution didn't change. I ran: # VBoxClient --vmsvga A second try and the guest resolution changed as I resized the VM window. I remember in the past Guest Additions "just worked" if they came already installed on the live image. IMHO the solution to this problem is to somehow call VBoxClient --vmsvga during boot time.
Problem: Screen resolution of the Leap-client cant be changed.
Also, I was able to change the screen resolution using guest's GNOME Settings. As I said, I believe VMSVGA itself is not the problem. Thank you! Changing the graphic driver to VBoxVGA fixed it! BTW, I failed a couple of times to download the guest extentions via VBox: It starts a kind of download manager, and after 100% download the 'net operation failed with unknown error {1:?}. My best guess is some authorisation issue when saving (where??) the guest extention Cheers Axel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

And here's the usual workaround: cd ~/.config/VirtualBox/ wget https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.0.12/VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.12.... # add optical media in media manager (VBoxManage command welcome) # extpack wget https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.0.12/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Exten... VBoxManage extpack install --replace Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.0.12.vbox-extpack Cheers, Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have this issue for a very long time. Using the workaround to manually download the guest additions. Stratos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Same here, I have to admit. It always popped up in the wrong moment. It would be nice, if somebody would create a bug report. Cheers, Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Oracle is aware of the problem and are supposed to be working on it. When everything is working correctly, the guest extensions ISO should not be needed for an openSUSE guest. Larry
Of course it is not an opensuse issues as I have understand but opensuse acts as a host also for a lot of users and then guest additions are needed for non-opensuse guests (especially windows). Usually linux guests that include the additions have no issues even with older versions of the guest additions but windows are failing miserably (as always...). In any case thanks Wolfgang for the bug report. Stratos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
