[opensuse-factory] RFE : Artwork change default wallpaper from jpg to png
This mail thread should just collect the yes/no opinion of big team like kde/gnome/lxde/xfce I would like to introduce a change in the default format used for our default-wallpaper in openSUSE The facts Default jpeg (total ~4.1MB) Default png (total 4.7MB) Why : mainly for plymouth and grub2 the both could use png (plymouth mono png) Who : I can proceed to the change in artwork and the branding package (if any advise raise : hands up please) Advantage : Plymouth/grub2 will be able to use the default wallpaper then we earn some MB on liveCD etc ... For example bootsplash and grub have to use certain kind of jpg and they will continue. But if on livecd we drop bootsplash for plymouth we can win ~6MB more Your opinion ? -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

The facts Default jpeg (total ~4.1MB) Default png (total 4.7MB)
Have you tried 'optipng' or 'advancecomp' for reducing PNG size? Any way, PNG wins. -- WBR Kyrill -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Kyrill thanks for the pointer ... Could be feasible at least and the result are quite good the sum of png is ~3.4MB now It takes time, but as it's not so frequently build ... time optipng -keep -preserve -nx -zc=9 -zm=9 -zs=1 -f=5 default-*.png OptiPNG 0.6.5: Advanced PNG optimizer. Your opinion ?
Maybe I'm not reading this right. But a number of users, myself included, didn't care for bootsplash and desktop wallpaper being the same in 12.1. It got a bit confusing not being sure if the system is done booting yet. I thought some of the caretakers here were conscious of that and were planning to avoid that confusion in 12.2. I get the benefits of freeing up disk space though. Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well it seems to be a bis-repetita for 12.2 the base grub splash, plymouth and kdm/gdm will be the same. Also after that part it's up to the user to change or keep the default wallpaper. I remember a lot of discussion on that subject and mostly the different desktop team can choose to stick to our actual way of doing things, or goes to what upstream propose. Bryen if really the fact, that the boot process (which is really quick on a simple desktop 12.2) and the desktop ready to use, cause trouble on end users, then it has to be clarify during M4 until M6/Beta phase, so it can be sorted out before the release I trust your marketing skills to find a way to inquiry users feedback. :-) -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
