[opensuse-factory] plasma-desktop eating cup
plasma-desktop appears to be really eating my cpu cycles to the point of making my system *very* unresponsive. Is there a way to disable the plasma-desktop and just have a plain window, or another option? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Killing plasma-desktop and restarting it alleviated this condition :^) -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Patrick, Thanks. I needed to kill and restart plasma to get the pager app to work properly when compiz is running. I hadn't looked in to how to do it yet and was a bit apprehensive about just killing the plasma PID (I don't know if that would also force a restart). But, it seems we are not alone in our need to kill and restart plasma. Googling it I stumbled across a 3 line script that is definitely cleaner than the "kill PID" I thought about. I just threw this in a script in ~/bin and it seems to work fine: #!/bin/bash kbuildsycoca4 kquitapp plasma-desktop kstart plasma-desktop & -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. tks, handy to know. After I restarted the plasma-desktop, I have not experienced the delays again. Might have been something that hadn't initialized correctly yet as that was my first boot into 11.2. I wish there was a way to install the nvidia.bin to get good graphics speed. I have installed: xorg-x11-driver-video xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau-3d and it is ..not.. bad, but not good either, at least not like it was with the nvidia binaries on SLED 10. I have the latest binary, but install fails as it complains that the kernel-sources are not "set-up" correctly ????? They are installed. I'm impressed with 11.2, but there are a few shortcomings: Klipper comes w/o configuration (copied from earlier SLED) hot-keys do not seem to stick pager short-cut keys are only cnfg for 4 desktops (but with some searching I found the way to configure 5 and 6) widgets take a little getting used to. don't care for the NetworkManager, switched. regular user does not have perms to eject or umount but can automount no alsoplayer no qps no system notification sounds play ??? but startup does (sometimes). I have sound on firefox streaming, but not on amarok or last-exit line drawing chars are garbage in screen ?? cannot get conky with a transparent background I like zypper, was using smart, but zypper should provide a download function. Dolphin seems to be quite functional, but does not umount. Haven't got my mysql, gallery2 or apache2 functioning yet :^(. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
