[opensuse-factory] Wallpaper "Contest"
Hi, Most important parts of in-distro branding (sans Plasma Splash) are done, so my focus shifted towards more QoL parts of distro. It would be nice to offer wallpapers package, different from branding package, that already exists in the distro. Why? Well, casual users are divided into two groups, those that will use preset wallpaper till the next release, and those that want some excitement in their life. For that group that want to change their wallpapers, usually first thing they will do (and what I usually do) is to look at available choices in settings. In case of openSUSE this choice is either default or none. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines#Wallpapers (I'm just copying it here because I heard complaints of too low contrast on elements of new wallpaper, because that's the point). Basically if you see those guidelines, disregard them completely, your submission doesn't qualify as "default", it should be fun, colourful, containing elements of green would be preferable. And submit anything you like, as long as it is licensed in a way in which we can use it as wallpaper (and please, reasonable resolutions, 4k/5k resolutions to support high DPI displays too (can also be svg). I have seen Darth_Wound showing off some wallpapers on subreddit, but apart from abstract ones it would be nice to see green scenery, maybe chameleon here and there, CGI images, whatever you see fitting. The worst part is that we got a month left, and in case of artwork, that is really limited amount of time. But I believe in our ability to pull that off and have that stuff ready before Leap 15.0 is released (otherwise it will just land in Tumbleweed, which is still not bad). As one of the authors of that wallpaper design (see [1]) I respectfully request that it is not included in any modern openSUSE distribution I think openSUSE deserves new designs, not something which is 5 years old and already has the privilege of being included in more versions of the distribution than any previous wallpaper [1] https://build.opensuse.org/package/rdiff/Base:System/branding-openSUSE?linkrev=base&rev=136 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

The users spoke and we still ship this as an optional enlightenment theme (not as the default) because people really like it. If were having an additional wallpaper package (great idea) I see no problem in including 1-2 of the most popular older wallpapers along with a number of new ones. We should of course do something new as the default branding but someone will always complain they don't like the new thing so why not give them the choice of the old one, if they really want it they'll just go download it from somewhere on the interwebs anyway. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

+++ Agreed. A strictly openSUSE stock wallpaper collection in one package? Volunteer here. Thinking openSUSE-wallpaper-history .... Nice little project, never created a package from scratch, seems a nice start.

Irrelevant, wallpaper-choice is not fixing, nor breaking anything. But, if I would start a small project creating such a package as openSUSE-wallpapert- history, would you be willing to help out ?
newer != better
better != the_old_ones either. :D. BTW, subproject is already there, incl empty package. https:// build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:Knurpht:openSUSE-wallpaper-collection -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. Colors and patterns affect mood and consequently productivity. Poor choice usurping good can break good mood and reduce productivity, just as good choice can turn a bad one around. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." May I make a suggestion that I'd like to see? The cover-art from the old SUSE Linux boxes. The 3D-rendered mathematical shapes. I'd love them as a set of cycling wallpapers. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o. I think, those were rendered with the 'surf' program. That was dropped from the distribution after 11.2 but is still available in OBS repos. The required surf command line should be somewhere in the old manuals (probably close to the thanks to Frank Zappa and Pavar)... and with those we might be able to render high-resolution versions that are appropriate for today's displays. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I heard even better proposal, create multiple packages with Wallpapers options, and maybe even have wallpaper packs like "wallpapers-ubuntu-16.04", "wallpapers-opensuse-pre42.3", "wallpapers-opensuse-15", "wallpapers-current" because they are licenced in a way in which we can use it, and on top of that they would be really cool way to show appreciation of other distros, as well as appreciation of our own community. The reason I found it cool, because there were people that submited wallpapers to both openSUSE and Ubuntu Bungie flickrs and some of them landed in Ubuntu Bungie like: https://www.flickr.com/photos/107524729@N08/10633668276/in/pool-opensuse-art... and some more. I also looked over some old submissions to openSUSE Artwork group there, some of them for sure will land in wallpaper package, they are too good. I'm against using Flickr for any kind of submissions, knowing Yahoos way of keeping data safe ;) So I created Github repo for it under https://github.com/LelCP/wallpapers I accept all pull requests as long as they include license. I'm well aware git is the worst way to keep any sort of artwork (ekhm, opensuse/artwork is hell), but I didn't have any better idea, so I just did what I know best. All those wallpaper packages should fill https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/artwork:wallpapers which is currently filled with 6-10 yo wallpapers, and I don't like that it's unused, time to fill it up with something fun :D LCP [Stasiek] https://lcp.world -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
