[opensuse-factory] (proposal) Persistent Live USB more trouble than help, fix or remove

Many users notice performance problems with the persistent live images, particularly in relation to what is needed for them to be persistent. In my personal experience, I can never use them more than once since they will stop working after the first boot. Many other users report incredibly slow booting and horrible performance lag. Users propose a means to toggle the behavior from GRUB when the Live image is being used. If infeasible, I think we should remove it altogether and instead direct users to roll their own with SUSE Studio. -- Roger Luedecke <roger.luedecke@gmail.com> openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Isnt it possible to disable it via kiwi_bybrispersistent=no in the boot parameters? - -- Regards, Uzair Shamim -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJUToQIAAoJEM66EOTZRH6+ZPYQAICXDK3C7KEftHI8B+EqQL5G F6rkKbR/MetKt4Kx6di8eu1t/nf++iQEQ21tMd6WUUvJUQt+3n9B5VJcc+6sQ6Ye vn5YW/ITa3RfpkJOVKpDCt0GqGtOBpHcrwmVV+DXTC+WrH30thJWKg2T/LLoOA+n 2pTFTMMdXu2UHe99QjXteO+znXu5AMbsRlvSELFfpHptlUf1Mv55H67L9/2yqGXk JNuyVRYzg759ztYyX8OkpIktK9rDo1rgpxLRzJ/Q3pEMynMOMHZGT67g+ZMEOEBv CTuTe0N3fz55EN0WxK3l1rOjil8dfwblsjfmzKfspy8a2xIYOYq6N9H2dUgOamqs C4qN9+yKzVDItPFb3+lu3eqUOL1CiU9g8+4f/vwUlQ94kWNZh/wrLftkJ9FrOGxa GLkYO+WupMkrDfkPWkZLF9h+xBHgAkJctKpanxlH8Ex+di6PD/oWjj1E2bySn6Kg g+cQJmnCE6EFyZUbGoL7HFYvrv8e2trZfAmNjBbDEl/P+9Az1R3kBlwzzNtFnFr2 QSBubA8werh2jSYLRaJnjzS5ISJtRyiVZLXxNRLn/t854A4xPKLOEkLRsp21OpzK +gtjt7BtS4KnrPrRlvcFFhluxVJWYONSRbpdn7G6H+HbQql3eB1EPcQcibT6rM0Z P0aq7cZiW2Hm36FB1KYI =2VlG -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I'll disagree with this as currently stated. I don't much mind a toggle, but removing completely would be a problem. It's important to remember that the live Rescue image is also a live image. And having persistent storage is important for the rescue image. It is what allows you to install you own tools to complement those already provided. As an addendum: If you use the "live-fat-stick" script to prepare a USB, then you won't have persistent storage. Perhaps we need a version of "live-fat-stick" for UEFI booting. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I should add that I actually re-imaged one of my USB keys as I assumed it was corrupt due to the filesystem persistence taking so long before first boot, it was well over 2-3 minutes on that key, which should be a ship_stopper. +1 I think most people use the live iso for testing and installing openSUSE, default to non persistent system is much better, it will be faster, and verifiable every time (media-check will work the second you boot, not like the current situation). Laggy live system (because it is r/w) is a show killer for new users trying openSUSE. If persistence is important, it can be added as another, non-default, grub option.
