KDE/Plasmashell: panel disappearing on monitor change, since this week also on new logins
Hi all, for the last couple of months I had occasional hiccups after putting my laptop into its docking station (or removing it from there). Apparently the enabling/disabling of the external monitors sometimes lead to the KDE/Plasmashell panel crashing or disappearing. Normally I could get it back using: kquitapp5 plasmashell kstart5 plasmashell Since this week this does no longer work. And in addition the disappearing also happens a lot more often and even without docking/undocking the laptop. - happened after "waking up" the laptop with an existing session - happened after a reboot after logging into a new session I have temporarily moved away ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and this seems to at least let me restart the plasmashell and get a panel back. However, I had to move away the file again today. I had made some customizations, but apparently they still caused the disappearing again today. I'll keep the default settings for now to see if the issue appears again. Anyone else having those issues? I found one bug from March 15th that sounds similar and have added my comments. Unfortunately this is still NEW and has no solution yet... https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1197141 Kind Regards, Johannes -- Johannes Kastl Linux Consultant & Trainer Tel.: +49 (0) 151 2372 5802 Mail: kastl@b1-systems.de B1 Systems GmbH Osterfeldstraße 7 / 85088 Vohburg http://www.b1-systems.de GF: Ralph Dehner Unternehmenssitz: Vohburg / AG: Ingolstadt,HRB 3537

Seems to be a different issue, but might be worth a look: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1197258 Regards, Frank

Thanks for the pointer. I had a look, but in my case I seem to have a working plasma workspace, it is just the panel that does not seem to start. Not modifying any settings on the panel this far did lead to the panel not yet disappearing again. I'll watch this further. In addition, I noticed that the multi-screen settings I had seem to be garbled. Even though the screens are properly identified by the system settings, selecting the left as primary gives my the task bar on the middle one and vice versa... Another thing I noticed on only one of my laptops (both running Tumbleweed and should have a "similar" plasmaworkspace configuration): I have two external monitors connected to a docking station, so it is MonitorA-MonitorB-LaptopScreen from left to right. In the plasma display settings the monitors are shown in the correct order, clicking identify also brings up the correct serial numbers on each screen. However, to have the plasmashell panel on the center screen, I need to select the left one as primary. New windows will then be opened on the left screen, but the panel is on the middle one. WTF? Anyone aware of this? Any hints where I could start digging? Not sure why only one use on one laptop has this funny behaviour. And of course I could just start with a new profile, but that would mean getting all of the settings back again, and I want to avoid that... :-) (I had a quick look into bugzilla, but either there is no bug or I missed it due to the wrong search terms...)
