Hi, Since 10.3 I only put on the DVDs what's listed in a pattern. For 10.3 I didn't dare to do too many changes, so I left most of the 10.2 packages in a REST-DVD pattern. But I want to get rid of this mass of unlisted packages, so here is the list of remaining packages. These are not Alpha3 and I would like some people to review the list for packages that should be on Beta1. So please review the list and give: package name, reason it should be on medium, pattern/topic to list it in Greetings, Stephan -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg)

And what should be a valid reason in your eyes? A reason for me is that I use the program, but I guess that's no reason for you. Wouldn't a vote system where everyone can vote for packages be better suited for that decision. Actually, the DVD has _tons_ of packages I don't use. So no, I would accept a "I use it daily to ...". What patterns or topics are available?
ccache
Should be placed in the pattern with the other developer tools.
ding
Useful if you are offline and want a translation for something. I use that all the time even though I'm online.
gv
Old but I still use it.
gvim
I couldn't even write this mail without gvim.
mmv
I usually use that for renaming multiple files. Most of the time faster than writing a script.
openswan
VPN
opie
Don't know but we should not ship without that.
pmidi
Command line midi player. I usually use that as the KDE programs for playing midi always sucked.
pwgen
Nice tool for generating passwords. Someone should write a GUI and install it by default IMHO to help people avoid stupid passwords.
timidity
Is there any alternative to timidity for soundcards that don't support midi in hardware?
units
An installation without that isn't complete. What else can convert to Zentner? Too cool to be excluded. I'd install it by default :-)
vdr
THE solution for DVB VCRs. Looks like vdr-plugins was forgotten. We should include that one too as it includes a xine output plugin useful for desktop use/budget cards.
xawtv
Probably still used by people with analog TV.
xchat
I use that for IRC.
xine-ui
kaffeine just sometimes is to heavy weight so xine-ui is still useful.
xosview
Put it where WindowMaker is, I need it :-)
xpdf
Talking as a security person I wouldn't recommend shiping that anymore at all as it would be one less place of xpdf code.
zd1211-firmware
Firmware for ZD1211 based WLAN sticks. I don't know how common those are. I have one at least. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I know, I use it too. Nevertheless xpdf security updates were anything but a picnic in the past so the less packages with xpdf code the better. I fear that xpdf-tools are required for next, upcoming CUPS versions, as there is the accepted opinion that PDF (and no more PostScript) will be the internal transport format for CUPS. xpdf-tools will be required then for debugging such files. xpdf-tools are required fullstop. pdfinfo and pdffonts are essential tools with no alternatives (I don't call cranking up acroread an alternative, and I don't think it gives as much info either). pdftops is the only usable conversion tool handling fonts correctly, that abominable ghostscript rubbish has all fonts outline-traced and replaced with polygons and/or bitmap (type 3) fonts. I find pdfimages irreplacable too. Bottom line: xpdf-tools are indispensable. Personally I don't like to be without xpdf either, but I se Ludwig's point. We should switch to poppler-tools: it provides the same tools as xpdf-tools, and it's better for security reasons (as already pointed out before in the thread). Well, maybe it would make sense to write a lightweight PDF viewer based on poppler from scratch. epdfview (plain Gtk) is a nice start, but it's unmaintained now. No. RPM Recommends/Supplements trigger the installer to install whatever/whenever is available. As both xsane and sane-frontends provide a GIMP plugin, both would have a Supplements but then GIMP users would have by default two scanning plugins which is not what I like to have by default: Fill the user's disk by default with all what looks useful regardless how often there is a tool for the same task. What I would need is non-mutual-exclusive RPM Alternatives preferably with additional conditions when which alternative should be preferred and one marked as fallback/default (obviously RPM Obsoletes/Conflicts is inappropriate). But I think this is all off-topic because as far as I understand the patterns they are basically used to get a reasonable default set of installed packages. Just a quick look over them.
audacity we certainly want to keep that.
bluez-hcidump I use this a lot to get opensync working ;)
convert This is one of the most important tools!
flac I think we should keep this.
grip I use this from time to time. It more reliable than ioslaves ...
gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra I think this is needed for many multimedia applications.
libopensync-plugin-google-calendar libopensync-plugin-moto libopensync-plugin-python-module I use them to synchronize a phone.
msynctool this is from opensync again
powertop this is quiet an interesting tool.
unix2dos I use this every now and then.
wpa_supplicant-gui This is really important at the moment. As nm is upgraded to 0.7
xchat I often use that.

I can say which packages of that list I use regularly, but not what pattern they should be in.
aide
Only intrusion detection shipped. There used to be an old stripped free version of tripwire, but that was prob getting too old to be useful (newer ones are not free). Not many (any?) alternatives.
alien
Convert debs to rpms for testing them out. Useful.
alsamixergui alsa-plugins-samplerate alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui
Don't know, are there alternatives, esp for alsa-tools?
audacity
I understand this is the only audio editor worth having.
blender
Commonly used render program. Distro would be incomplete without, though I don't use it myself.
bonnie bonnie++
Are there better disk performance test programs than these?
busybox
Keep for emergencies.
bzip2-doc
Surely this belongs with bzip2?
chkrootkit
Keep.
ckermit
Old communications package. Used seldom, but when, is essential.
dar
There are probably people relying on this for their backup schemes.
ddrescue
The SUSE version is HEAPS better than the GNU one! Or has that changed?
detex
(La)tex to ASCII converter. Useful and without alternative.
djvulibre
Alternatives to reading this file format?
dvi2tty
.dvi to ASCII converter. I use this occasionally, no alternative I can think of.
flac
This looks like an essential command line tool for handling that audio format to me.
gv
I use this all the time because I don't like the KDE overhead, and gv still has some user interface functions which never made it into kpdf. It also shows postscript files (kpdf does not, that shows a pdf conversio instead, which isn't necessarily the same). Essential IMHO.
html2text
Often has a very good html to text rendering not reached by any other tool. I use this daily in scripts.
kernel-docs
Uhm, isn't this mandatory for a Linux distro?
lftp
Which other ftp client can do an easy ftp file upload?
mmv
In daily use for multi-renaming of files using shell globs. There's no GUI for this sort of thing and nothing else for the same job (bash doesn't cut it in effeiciency here). Absolutely essential IMHO.
netatalk
Anyone still using appletalk?
openmotif
Essential for nedit.
par
Paragraph formatter which I use daily because it can keep initial comment characters.
postgresql postgresql-contrib postgresql-server
Are you really thinking of discontinuing postgresql?
pptpd
I understand there are quite a few places which only allow VPNs with this Redmond stuff.
privoxy
I'm relying on this every time I look at a web page. Web-browsers' filters suck for 2 reasons: they only work with their own browser (so I get to set that up per browser - no thanks), and they aren't flexible enough.
seccheck
Useful as long as it's maintained. I've been running it on most of my systems.
statserial
Some people still use serial ports. USB-to-serial converters a-la FTDI are very common.
subversion-doc subversion-python subversion-server subversion-tools
Documentation for subversion would be essential (unless it's now in another subversion package). I can see the others being useful too.
unison
Similar to rsync, but works in both directions.
wondershaper
A very good start for bandwidth management, I would (and have) modified those scripts rather than start over.
xfsdump
Isn't that needed when using XFS filesystems?
xpdf
Its tools and its pdf interpreter are absolutely essential. I use the GUI too with dodgy PDFs and to check on rendering differences against gv and acroread. OK, perhaps I didn't make myself clear. Your list seems to made with "we'll drop every package on that list" - that's not the case, I'm only trying to free space on the DVD for the most important things. audacity
IMO the best sound editor on Linux. At least for users that don't use a sound editor often. ;) Should stay on DVD. Maybe in some multimedia pattern.
aumix
Good for non-interactive usage. I use it for key bindings in my environment. Maybe in some console pattern where also mutt and screen resides.
capisuite
I don't use it, but it would be a pity if that would be dropped from DVD. This was developed @SUSE and ISDN is still used for fax ...
ccache
I use that at home where I don't have that fast build machines. ;) Should stay on DVD, in some development pattern where also gcc resides.
ddrescue
That should be even in the rescue CD I think. :)
ding
Very useful on laptops where you don't have an internet connection. Should stay. I even would install it by default on KDE and GNOME. ;)
gcal
Keep this. Basic tool. Uli needs that to write his mail. ;) Console pattern.
grip
Keep this! Very useful tools to rip CDs. One of the "just works" tool that I really like. :) Multimedia pattern.
gthumb
My favourite image browser. GNOME pattern.
gtklp
Good alternative to kprinter. Keep this. I'd even add this in the Xfce pattern.
gv
Best Postscript viewer ever! Please keep. Maybe some "plain old X applications" pattern.
gvim
Hey, that's my most used application! Allows much nicer color schemes than vim and also a better mouse usage [yes, I know :set mouse=a]. Please keep, maybe some deveopment pattern.
jedit
Hm ..., don't use that any longer, but I used it as programming editor for a long time. I still think that it's very nice. Depeding on which Java we ship with the DVDs (only Sun or IBM Java has a complete Swing implementation, IIRC) that might stay, too. Deveopment pattern.
lftp
The best ftp client forever. Please keep! I'd even install that by default. Console pattern.
sshfs
I often use that at home to mount file systems over VPN. Keep. ;)
unison
I use that for file synchronisation every day. One of the programs that "just work". Please keep. Maybe the same "plain old X pattern" as gv.
units
Standard unix program. I'd even install that by default. Console pattern.
unix2dos
Console pattern.
usbview
Doesn't work without usbfs. I wrote a patch to port to libusb but I didn't get any response from Greg KH. I'd drop that package in current state entirely.
xcompmgr
Nice for "old" window managers. Please keep. Although I don't use it currently.
xosd
Since that contains the library ... I use that for an program that shows the dektop name when switching desktops. Please keep. ;)
xosview
Becoming nostalgic. :) vote++, "old X pattern".
xpdf
See other discussion. Same pattern as gv.
xv
My daily usage image viewer. Can read from stdin quilt graph|dot -Tpng|xv - Not many programs can do this. "old X pattern". Remembers me to the discussion to package documentation/* (or at least some files) independently of kernel-source. Would also solve that issue. kernel-doc is too much to install it by default. Sorry, I was thinking "upstream GNOME desktop". We really want this since it provides an easy way to subscribe to web calendars. It was probably forgotten in 10.3 and earlier :-)
I never saw the need to subscribe to a web calendar, so I'm unsure if this really should be part of the default installation. But if the GNOME team thinks so, it's fine. You just need to name another package to be dropped from the CD ;(
Ouch. So ignore this package for now, I guess. We'll have space soon, though, since we've been reviewing the GNOME patterns: http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Pattern_Review I'll just add a note there that we want to add evolution-webcal when we'll have space. umtsmon Reason: Despite NetworkManager finally offering UMTS support, I does not cover the full range of functionality umtsmon provides (like SMS or changing PIN as far as I can see), plus NetworkManager is a NoGo for many and actually failed to work or me in my last tests in March. Pattern: Laptop oprofile Reason: Commonly used tool for performance debugging, enabled by our kernels. Pattern: Base Development, though not necessarily enabled by default. wondershaper Reason: I see this recommended and used with certain regularity, though it is less clear cut than the first two. Pattern: Network Administration? xfsdump Reason: key for those using XFS file systems. Pattern: Enhanced Base System. I haven't seen these mentioned in other mails: iptraf - a nice tool for network monitoring - server or advanced user wiggle - I use it sometimes - should be in the same pattern as diff and patch Vladimir --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You can leave out all if it was up to me.... I guess if they are needed, they will be available on a repo? I only use flac, but i would not know why i could not install it myself.... alsamixergui aumix One of them to have a command line mixer.
audacity Might make sense as there is no alternative.
bogofilter It's faster than spamassasin, that I don't see here, so probably it is on the DVD. Anyway, one is enough on the DVD.
htdig Used by the KDevelop documentation system and I think by KDE as well.
isapnp If you have an old PC with an ISA network card... :)
libavc1394 libcap-progs libcdio-utils libdc1394 libdvdnav libraw1394
I'd keep them to support digital video camcorders out of the box.
libpqxx I always had to download and install it, so would be nice on the DVD.
postgresql postgresql-contrib postgresql-server As with the above, I use postgresql on many systems.
privoxy Very useful, but if it isn't configured by default, only those who know about it will install. And as it is an internet tool, shouldn't be an issue to download from the net.
timidity Needed for MIDI on many hardware.
xine-ui I still use it many times instead of the KDE frontends...

These are libs mostly, they hardly make DV camcorders work. And libcio-utils is: This library encapsulates CD-ROM reading and control So I discard that feedback. Kino needs them, but hm, kino is not shipped with openSUSE, it seems. Here is what it really needs: 1. Install libdv 2. Install libraw1394 3. Install libavc1394 4. Install libiec61883 But of course this point is not valid if kino will not be on the DVD. Andras -- Quanta Plus developer - http://quanta.kdewebdev.org K Desktop Environment - http://www.kde.org

Will these packages still be available via repositories? If not, then here are some that I would like to see stay on the DVD because I use them. ckermit - connect to serial interfaces for hardware, only thing that works reliably pbbuttonsd - useful for uncooperative powerbooks rsh-server - needed to support legacy applications If these will still be available via repository, then there is probably no need to put them on the DVD. No, these is purely about the DVD. The factory repository has 5383+1313 i586+noarch packages (not counting non-oss and debug). The i586 DVD only 3148 atm. And the build service repositories have like 30.000 more. So we're only looking at a small fraction that have to stay on DVD. from intersection of my packages and your list: * aumix - text based mixer, which also has quite wide command line options for non-interactive use. group: console utilities, audio * xpdf - a must have. Considering discussion about poppler: could we have it on 11.0 and possibly drop it before 11.1 (aka SLE11) in case some lightweight frontend for poppler appears? (I just wanted to write "emerges" yet it reminded me of something...) :) group: basic X software others: + alsa* - similar to aumix. Included in virtually any distribution, users moving to openSUSE would be confused not finding it. group: console utilities, audio + gv - xpdf for PostScript - lightweight basic utility. group: basic X software + xawtv - again: IMHO quite basic tool for v4l. group: X, video Best regards Petr --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
