[opensuse-factory] status openSUSE 11.1
Hi, You may wonder why you haven't heared from me - but I'm stil alive. The status of 11.1 is pretty short: it's cursed. The GM was supposed to be done on thursday last week, but late on tuesday we found that the rpm headers in the 11.1 project were all wrong and so we rebuilt all packages, which took till friday due the build service playing hard to get. Then I released a GMC and we fixed 5 urgent problems to have a GM on monday - so I thought. Casual J. noticed in #457095 that the download DVD miss the "check installation medium" boot entry - which was really important to get back, so tuesday. This morning I noticed that the images for the installation contain files they really should not contain and so we had redo the DVDs one more time. But we decided to ship the retail DVD even with this bug to the fab. And this afternoon we noticed that a non-standard 11.0 update (well, one that is standard 11.0 + acroread installed) on x86_64 will leave the system unusable. This bug (bnc#457564 if you like reading horror storries) made us redo 110(!) packages + resend the DVDs to the fab. So we're here still without GM - but fortunately still 9 days to go for public download. Stay tuned :) Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Is the new Intel video driver going to be included?! PLEASE?! Fred -- "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. I really couldn't say, the bug was mentioned earlier on in this thread and at the moment it's reopened for SLED and it was proven that it's not the intel driver but a suse issue. It seems to be the slow down problem that Fred was refering to. There are two novel bugs referenced https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438266 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=439214 There doesn't seem to be a bug open for opensuse 11.1 only SLED. I use nvidia graphics therefore I am not affected. I have no idea "what" the new driver is.....only that we were told here that it's in use "internally" and doesn't have the problems all of us with i965 and other chipsets have had. New driver for i965 and other 3-digit video chipsets that is "internal" and not released yet. The actual test of this logic (the "N" test) will be whether the sales number for 11.1 look like the first part of a capital 'N' over the life of the release or whether that look the the top of a small 'n' over the release life. If 11.1 goes out in its current shape, unfortunately, I think the first half N will adequately reflect the must have orders pouring in on day 1+2 but then a steep decline over the remainder of its life. I hope that all of the compiz bugs have been handled. I think spinning a totally black CUBE on the screen is a great way to spend your afternoon. It actually takes a little tenacity to get screenshots of the black darling. But, as it always does, the gee whiz wears off and then you stuck with just another major marketing backlash and virtually no compiz to offer -- At least we will have front row seats to the event. I'm praying that all of the problems from 11.0 will now be a thing of the past, but after hearing we are pressing DVD's with known bugs in them, that moderates against seeing the buggie 11.0 problems being gone. -- David C. Yay! Awesome news. One question: is there a repo I can upgrade to to get on the GM release? I'm trying to take some screesnhots for the Screenshots page & write some Sneak Peeks (as being discussed in the Marketing mailinglist), and there are bugs in RC1 that negatively effect that (e.g. Tomboy not loading). -- Kevin "Yeaux" Dupuy - openSUSE Member Public Mail: <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from the Yeaux! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It's just solved. We only noticed one setup (and it's not too unlikely that there can be more if you picked the "right" packages from tons of repos) where the solver still can still pick a solution that is suprising (changing the desktop to i586 on x86_64). So you're still asked to check your proposed update path. The problematic package we've seen is wine.i586 when updating x86_64 to the retail medium, but as I said there might be tons of others out there creating that problem. Wine is the only one I have noticed lately, but back at 11.1 Beta, several packages were having the same problem - a bug was filed. At one point it was changing rpm to i586 and complaining that following x86_64 packages were for the x86_64 architecture. I found many i586 packages installed. I had to do lots of manual installs with "rpm -Uvh --ignorearch" of the affected x86_64 packages to straighten it out. "zypper rm wine", "zypper in wine" still installs the i586 package.
