Hi *, is there a public rsync mirror for openSuSE Tumbleweed preferrably in Germany? I couldn't find one in the mirror lists. TIA. Bye. Michael. -- Michael Hirmke -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

ftp.gwdg.de::pub/opensuse/ offers openSUSE But I'm not sure how often it syncs. The same applied to ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de::opensuse which offers it via rsync too. I had not been able to find a document which summarizes this. The easiest approach is to open http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/factory/repo/oss/ in a browser, to click on on of the right most links labled with 'Details', and then to check if one of the listed mirrors offers rsync access too. Having an overview page like http://www.exim.org/mirmon/ftp_mirrors.html for exim would be nice. I'm not talking about the colors. ;) Cheers, Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team + SUSE Labs SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

ftp.gwdg.de::pub/opensuse/ offers openSUSE But I'm not sure how often it syncs.
Every 4 hours. /pub/opensuse/repositories/ gets pushed directly, so should be actual all the time. tumbleweed is part of repositories.

What is "the same"?

uhm, Factory == Tumbleweed in this case? I really don't want the Factory packages, if they are what they have been in the last years. If they are already merged to one repo, it would be ok.

Factory == Tumbleweed in EVERY case. Guys, stop making your life miserable by this marketing jump. I gladly link again to the mail I explained the integration process: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2015-01/msg00296.html If you must have a difference between 'Factory' and 'Tumbleweed': Factory is the integration process. Built trees are sent to openQA. It is not available for download [*]. As soon as it's being published (in the /factory AND /tumbleweed locations) it is called Tumbleweed... /factory and /tumbleweed are equal. [*] you can use osc getbinaries if you really want stuff from Factory.. but there is no repository published anywhere. Cheers -- Dimstar / Dominique Leuenberger <dimstar@opensuse.org>

My take on Tumbleweed is that it's mostly a superficial rename of factory, designed to make the name better reflect its purpose. Only the upper levels of the project got renamed. Most things scripts depend on kept the name factory. That includes the main repos oss & non-oss. Where you see main repos named tumbleweed it's because of symlinks. If you ask for tumbleweed you get factory, and vice versa. IOW, so far, factory as we knew it is mostly still with us, and tumbleweed is mostly a nickname for it, with some policy changes that don't manifest in the names. According to http://mirrors.opensuse.org/ rsync://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/ has what you need. Where you see checkboxes in its Factory column, just pretend the column heading is Tumbleweed. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Felix, I very much disagree with your simplification. In June factory and Tumbleweed significantly diverged due to factory having GCC 5 and Tumbleweed still being back a version. I gather you've worked in formal IT areas. When I consulted at Ford all important projects had to have both a QA server and production server. Prior to releasing any new code (or system config change) it had to first be rolled to the QA server and from then after testing it was rolled from the QA server to the production server. 95% of the time the code on the QA server was identical to the production server, but none the less we all knew it could on occasion get very much ahead of where the production server was. Factory is the QA Server equivalent. It is where software packages go for preliminary (automated) testing. It is only after some level of testing that the get rolled out to Tumbleweed. The GCC 5 package took 3 weeks or so to get through autoQA so there was a significant divergence of factory and tumbleweed during that time. I was going by my recollection of http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-announce/2014-10/msg00000.html
In June factory and Tumbleweed significantly diverged due to factory having GCC 5 and Tumbleweed still being back a version.
I guess my consciousness got behind. Last I remember (from last fall), tumbleweed was not a separate line item on http://download.opensuse.org/ and baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss and baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss were said to be equivalent for at least the next 6 months, and it's now been more than 6 months.
I gather you've worked in formal IT areas.

I guess if I want to continue using Factory like it was prior to creation of openSUSE's rolling release I need to switch back to baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." autoQA takes less than a day I believe, so the only time Tumbleweed and Factory diverge for over a day is when there is a known broken factory config. If in those situations you want the known broken setup, then yes I think you have to get the factory ISO. fyi: I don't mean to imply that is crazy. The breakage could easily be in an area you don't care about, so getting the factory ISO would allow you to test out other areas of the factory ISO. A major reason for my use of any development distro (Factory, Rawhide, Cauldron, etc.) is discovering previously unreported breakage.

I can't tell what message you are trying to convey, or to whom. $SUBJECT is about rsync access, while that baseurl in my previous post is about repo configuration, used with zypper and yast to update/upgrade. I rarely use even the smallest of iso files, normally doing the few new installations I do by loading installation kernel and initrd from local HD with Grub (induced as habit in small part a result of annoying installation bugs that lie fallow for long periods): http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=903730 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=926841 Consequently, installation, and thus isos, is an overall area in which I am particularly distinterested. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
