[opensuse-factory] ADSL and Opensuse 12.1
The new Opensuse 12.1, will have the adsl packages with the first install enabled? The last weekend I installed opensuse 11.4 in the PC of a friend and I made the necessary updates in my house. When it wanted to connect to internet at his home, using an ADSL connection, it was found that he could not connect, because the adsl connection was not configured. I explained it how to configure the connection by phone, but it was not possible, because Yast needed to install the packages smpppd, and linux-atm-lib, and later the utility kinternet or qinternet. Yesterday I got to his home, and I must to download the packages executing firefox in windows, but with surprise, I could not find the package linux-atm-lib. I probed ther fisrt time with the package linux-atm, but this package required the atmlib package, and I must to reboot in windows to download it and install it in Opensuse, but it not worked, when I tried to make the adsl configuration in Yast, because the linux-atm-lib package was not present, Yast has not saved the configuration, and so on. You have no idea how annoying it is having to reboot 5 times and use windows to solve the problems opensuse, because I must to reboot in windows and Opensuse about five times in both system, and made the adsl configuration five times. At last, because I hatte no way to find the linux-atm-lib package for Opensuse 11.4, I probed to download and install the linux-atm-lib package for Opensuse 11.3, and it worked. About the last five versiones of Opensuse have not enabled in the system with the first install the adsl packages, and in many cases, the needed packages was not present in the cd or dvd. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668586 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=695681 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

what kind of box? is it a ethernet one or an USB? for ethernet there is no config needed else the network one. For USB I don't know :-( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

When you have ethernet, but connect configuring a dsl ( for example with bridge, usb, etc ) you need those package So yeap they should be pre-installed. In fact the only thing that's wrong is installing a openSUSE on a ethernet connexion then move that box. without dvd source, or a way to install missing package for dsl If the install is made with configuring the dsl connexion, the package are installed -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I already noted that if a hardware is not found at install time, it's pretty hard to do afterward. But may be in this case one have to anticipate and don't use automatic config (not tried, just guess) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Now I see the files on the dvd and: the kinternet package is not present, the linux-atm-lib package is not present, the qinternet package is present, the smpppd package is present. I do'nt know how You configures the dsl connexion, if one of the needed packages is not present on the dvd, and Yast do'nt saves the dsl configuration, because that. This is for the case when I must to make the login from the box. If the login is made by the dsl modem router, is no need to configure the dsl connection. present dsl box in France are all of the ethernet make. They have two modes: bridge (the login is made by the ISP equipment dhcp) or router (the login is made by the box dhcp). only ISDN or phone line (56k) modems need other help. In any case the authentification is dobne by the dsl box, not by the user. we had some time ago usb modems but I never had one. I don't know how does work other countries (but I know many people in France try to use the dsl yast module and of course fail, so why I explain that for the archives) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

A usb dsl modem simply uses usb to communicate instead of the network ie.your internet comes through a usb port instead of ethx. The yast dsl setup is used for additional dsl connections eg. if you have a special gaming account as well as a normal account with your service provider/isp and you need to have a pppoe tunnel through your existing internet connection to connect with this account. The authentication in this case is performed on your computer as it would with a dial up modem. I've used a dsl router that had network and a usb port which was so simple to use that I cannot remember what the name of the device created when the usb was connected was. I simply used this connection to setup the network ports on the router, didn't need the yast dsl module which sets up devices called dslx. I think Juan should, with his modem connected, post the output from "sudo hwinfo --usb --pppoe --network --bridge --dsl --modem --usb" to give us an idea of what the device he's trying to set up is, the name and model would also help. It's possible (I don't know of one) that the device is dumb usb to wan device that requires you to setup a tunnel and authenticate from your computer. Not for usb. For adsl via ethernet, they are 2 cases: 1- The adsl modem router is configured by the provider to make the automatic login. In this case, is no need to configure the adsl. Only the automatic or manual config for ethernet is needed. 2- The login process is made from the box, and in this case, I need to configure the adsl in the box, and in this case are needed the packages smpppd, linux-atm-lib, and the utility to manage the connection from the desktop, like kinternet or qinternet. Same in Germoney: The first type is integrated DSL Modem/Router boxes which are in fact small busybox linux systems. They come with a web interface and do PPPoE on their own, transparent to the attached pc. Second are modem-only devices which don't do PPPoE by themselves but require a client router / client pc to handle the PPPoE stuff directly. The latter are becoming out of fashion but they still exist. -- Ralf Lang Linux Consultant / Developer B1 Systems GmbH Osterfeldstraße 7 / 85088 Vohburg / http://www.b1-systems.de GF: Ralph Dehner / Unternehmenssitz: Vohburg / AG: Ingolstadt,HRB 3537 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
