I used 9.0 for a while. AFAIK when it become unmaintained, there where no way to know that from YOU. may be I missed something in the logs? it was vivible in the install package that the inst-source had moved, but not in you. I don't know if it's always the case. but anyway, there should be be a big red messages saying "this version is no more maintained from YOU", for the future distros thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Its a good idea, perhaps we can add the functionality for the next products (after 10.1). We also post announcements to suse-security-announce and (I think) to suse-linux-announce. Ciao, Marcus

No need to do that. Simply release a patch with the description "security updates are discontinued" which gives the warning. If it is installed, it can change the susewatcher button to go red permanently, if it is not installed, users still see it as available security update. it's an option, but many of such computers are working unattended. i'ts easy to send a message to root or update YOU :-) to make it send warnings :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Sure. If that can be done now, that would be great. If the current productlines do not make that possible, an other temporary solution can be found. No idea if a mail can be send by running YOU. It would be a very good idea. Send people an email to root that explains a bit and points them to a website explaining more in detail what to do, why it is done and so on. OK, who puts this in as a feature request and who should be in CC? houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Sie ist das Kostbarste, was wir haben, denn es ist unwiederbringliche Lebenszeit. We can run scripts via YOU. Its not hard to do. ;) But where to send the mail? root would be the only choice.

I added a feature request already in suses internally feature db, since this is also interesting for our business products. Ciao, Marcus

Well, yes. I would not see any reason to use anything else. Those people who do not read root mail have only themselves to blame. Nobody but themselves. And SUSE who does not set the defailt mail from root to the first user that is made. :-)

So we don't get feedback on this till whenever it is ready? Or is there a bugzilla number we can track? houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. No way to send it to that person. I do not want Mister Doe from acoounting reading about it. I want the maintainer to read about it. Most likely these systems do have a process in place thta allowes them to see mails send to root. At least they should. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. I'm not english native speaking, forgive me if I Have sometime dificulties to maske me clear. I mean than usually root mail is sent by the sytem to an other user (choosed by root) and else at the next root login he will get a message "new mail" jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

The fact that he gets a message 'new mail' is just because there is a mail send to that user. In this case root. Just sending mail to root will do all and any of the above. It arrive in the mailbox root or any mailbox determend in /etc/aliases. The owner of the mailbox will see a 'new mail' when he or she logs in with every mail. Wether this is a mail send by a script, a spammer or your parner does not matter. So sending to root should be enough and should be the only choice. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. sure, but this could be a good help for non-professional users. Now, with the spreading of DSL lines, the use of old, nearly free computers (I personally use old laptops, small and silencious) as gateway/router/server is a must, but these users are not that used to security. and I think small companies may not be so good neither :-) I see a great number of potential users here, and more if they begin as OSS users they could as well become Pro version owners soon or later (I know I would if I worked for a company and not at home) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos
