[opensuse-factory] zypper
I installed milestone7. (It is the first time I try out milestones.) I can use zypper, but not yast. Is there a reason for this? With yast you have a reasonable clear way to see how far you are with the update. Not with zypper. That is why I would prefer yast. But if that is not possible with a milestone, I can life with that. -- Cecil Westerhof Senior Software Engineer M Cecil@Decebal.nl LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cecilwesterhof -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Care to describe what the problem with Yast is ? and why you think zypper is unreasonably unclear showing the status of an update ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

When doing online update, I get 'No update repository'. I run configuration workflow. I try 'Register for support and get update repository'. I get: 'File /content.key not found on medium http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss'. After that I have to follow an URL, but when I do this, I get: 'A required field was missing: command'. What is a little strange. First after an install zypper up would install/update a lot. Just now it did only 4 packages. But when running it again now it is going to install/update 901 packages. Using 1,2 GB. -- Cecil Westerhof Senior Software Engineer M Cecil@Decebal.nl LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cecilwesterhof -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It happens when zypper updates has package management as one of updates. That is first to update. Not when using 'zypper up'. This just updates packages to newer available versions where possible. What you described is true for 'zypper patch'. Cecil, there is no official 'update reposisitory' (one, which provides 'patches') for 11.2 until it's released. That's probably why YaST Registration does not add an update repo and YaST Online Update shows now updates. Nevertheless, you should be able to update the 'zypper up' way also in YaST Software Management. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

How? It is not very important -zypper works-, but I am used to working with yast. -- Cecil Westerhof Senior Software Engineer M Cecil@Decebal.nl LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cecilwesterhof -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I thought there was some obvious way to do this, but it seems not. But you can e.g. click on the Repositories tab, select the @System repo (these are your installed packages), right-click on the package list and select 'All in this list -> Update if newer version is available'. But you currently you can get a lot of dependency problems to solve. This needs to be improved a bit. Zypper 'up' automatically ignores all updates which are not installable or need user's decision, so it's currently more convenient to use 'zypper up' for this. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

dependency problems don't come from zypper or yast, but from the repos and packages you're using. that's why i'm using yast from time to time: it's easier to see all dep. problems and sort them out. in zypper, from the CLI, that's less convenient. -- ys phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Sure, but my point was, that with 'zypper up' you won't ever get a dependency problem - it'll automatically skip problematic updates; YaST will not. But to my knowledge, similar functionality will be provided also in YaST in the future. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

ah, now i understand. i do hope that it will be possible to switch between skipping and no-skipping, because i want to know what the problems are. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yast2 online update will only work when 11.2 is released and the update repository starts supplying updates. The equivalent to zypper update in yast is:- 1) Select Yast2 Software Management or if you start it from the command line, "yast2 sw_single" 2) Select repositories tab or view, if there is no repositories tab, to open one in the qt (kde) version. 3) Select the @system repository. 4) Right click on any package an select context menu item "all in this list" and from the sub menu "update if a newer version is available" Hope this helps Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'll use zypper untill 11.2 is released. and why you think zypper is unreasonably unclear showing the status of an update ?
Maybe Cecil refers to the missing ETA, and the cryptic Retrieving foo-1.2.3 [x of y] .... status lines when zypper is installing something. It deserves improvements, no doubt, but unfortunately i've been pretty busy past few moths, so it will either have to wait or somebody helps me with it :O) Anybody interested, please get in touch with us on zypp-devel@o.o. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---
