That is really unpleasant, especially given the fact that quite a lot of our community chats are using Telegram. Can anyone explain why a GPL licensed [1] software needs legal review and maybe how we speed this up? Thanks, vinz. Well never mind, I just isntalled another version from here: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/server:messaging/telegram-desktop But I have another question, when official update comes, will this package be overwritten? Default today is to keep vendor, so no, it should not be automatically replaced using simple "zypper dup". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Sounds like you never "enjoyed" an explanation of the legal review process ;-) Coolo gave a talk about it at oSC17: https://media.ccc.de/v/1374-opensuse-legal-review-process Oh, and don't get the quotes around "enjoyed" wrong - it's a good talk, but the legal stuff might cause headache. (And for this specific case, Christophe already explained that it's not as easy as "GPL licensed".) Once I *removed* one of a handful of licenses from a package and it got stuck in legal review for two months iirc. You'd think removing a license wouldn't need any review... Lesson learned: never change a package's license unless you're okay with it being stuck in limbo for months.

Legal reviews are faster nowadays for simple cases. After a quick look: The new version in SR#811396 embeds a bunch a new 3rdparty modules with different licenses (MIT, BSD 2 and 3 Clause, LGPL-2.1-only, Boost). But it also contains files which are not compatible with the 'License: GPL-3.0-only' line in the spec file. src/qt-im and src/qt4-im are GPL-2.0-only. The files in src/qt5-im don't have a license at all. Unless the author relicensed them, one can believe they're also GPL-2.0-only.
