[opensuse-factory] Re: [opensuse] ThinkPad E520 WiFi & Knetwork manager - openSUSE 12.1
* James Knott
I have the Live CD version of the latest pre-release version of openSUSE 12.1. Everything seems to work, except I can't get KNetworkManager to work with the WiFi (Realtek rtl8192ce module). I can get it to create a wlan0, if I use the traditional "ifup" method. However, when I try to use KNetworkMangager, I can't even enable WiFi. When I click on "Enable", it quickly disables it again.
Not to hijack the thread but problems may be related... I have the same on an Acer 5520 but atheros AR5BXB63 w/ath5k driver and NM doesn't provide the opportunity to select wireless (grayed out). "ifup wlan0" does get a wireless address but only inet6. No problem connedting wired. ifup wlan0: wlan0 device: Atheros Communications Inc. Note that wlan0 does get an inet6 address but not inet4 ????
You are not associated - look at iwconfig. The inet6 address is generated from the hardware address and does not imply communication with a DHCP server. Is the radio blocked? That is the usual cause for the wireless option being grayed out in NetworkManager. Check that with '/usr/sbin/rfkill list'. You will probably have to install rfkill first. My experience is that if the wired interface is set to start on boot, then ifup and friends will never get you wireless. You need ifcfg-eth0 to set startmode to ifplugd or manual. I just booted Build 0345 of the KDE Live CD for i586 in a VM. The ifcfg-eth0 contains the line "STARTMODE='onboot'". I think that is a bug and should be changed to "STARTMODE='ifplugd'".
