[opensuse-factory] nVidia/Xorg problems on 11.3?
Time to post to this ML I think :-) I started a discussion on the user mailing list about a problem with my 11.3 install. Using Nouveau, KVM, defaults, KDE4 is full of corrupted graphics and will periodically crash - this is something reported by a few people in various places (ML, forum etc). On top of that I was experiencing short freezes in KDE. The entire desktop would lock for 2 or 3 seconds and then continue. During that lock, the computer would not respond at all.... the CPU fan would spool up (which it usually does when the CPU is under heavy load) for the length of the freeze. I installed the latest nVidia binary drivers - 256.35 - which was only possible by disabling KVM and blacklisting Noeveau and adding nomodeset to the boot params. The freezing problem persisted after installing the drivers and rebooting (including multiple reboots). I ssh'ed to the problem machine and ran top to try and monitor what was going on during a freeze. When a freeze occurred, Xorg would shoot up to 100% CPU. Through all this, nothing relevant is being written to /var/log/messages etc. I stumbled on the "solution" if you can call it that... for other reasons I installed the latest kernel from Kernel:Head - kernel 2.6.35-rc6. After rebooting (and rebuilding the nVidia driver), the freeze problem has gone away. Xorg stays in the range of 1% to 25% CPU (25% being peak) with an average of about 10% or so during desktop activity (screen updates, animations, etc... usual KDE4 stuff) - so it's behaving correctly now... and after several hours of heavy use, the freeze problem has not resurfaced. I happenend to notice that after installing the nVidia binary drivers, one need to run mkinitrd to put the kernel module in the initrd. Then it runs (for me) perfectly without disabling anything. When I didn't update the initrd I got also a crash and had to disable kms to be able to get in. This would also explain why installing a different kernel helps, it runs mkinitrd.

That gets around the disable KVM etc thing... but doesn't explain the 2 second freezes though does it?
