I happenend to notice that after installing the nVidia binary drivers, one need to run mkinitrd to put the kernel module in the initrd. Then it runs (for me) perfectly without disabling anything. When I didn't update the initrd I got also a crash and had to disable kms to be able to get in. This would also explain why installing a different kernel helps, it runs mkinitrd.
