[opensuse-factory] 10.2 Alpha 4 install fails on low end hardware
10.2a4 cd1 & mini-iso (both checked with md5sum on file and verified by k3b burner) Very early in install, "Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!" occurs just after "freeing unused kernel memory" message, which is followed by "SMP" alone on a line. Hardware isn't SMP... Tried default install, "safe settings" and using F4 to pre-select NFS & server - all crash in the same way. Hardware is AMD K6-2/500 with 512M RAM, ATI AGP video; runs 10.1 perfectly. I can post a picture of the screen but obviously no log files etc. This looks similar to 203466 (not posted by me) though that was 10.2 alpha 3. Has anyone had a successful install on 10.2a4 on similar low end hardware? I have raised bug 204252 for this. -- Cheers Richard. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I don't see the SMP on mine, and the system which I'm trying to install it upon doesn't support SMP as yet (see below).

Probably looks remarkably similar to this[0]: URL:http://www.davjam.org/~davjam/images/parallels_10.2alpha4.gif
This looks similar to 203466 (not posted by me) though that was 10.2 alpha 3.
Has anyone had a successful install on 10.2a4 on similar low end hardware?
Not a low end system, but have successfully upgraded from alpha3 on a laptop[1]. I won't make too many comments about the changes to KDE, except to say that I switched the KDE menu back to classic style after only a few minutes of testing.
I have raised bug 204252 for this.
This looks exactly the same as the problem I, and at least one other person, have when trying to install it on a Parallels virtual machine. The bug report in that case (#202605) was originally reported as a failure of alpha3 to install where it locked up and, in my case, occupied 100% CPU time of one processor of my SMP machine. [0] Why it's showing the kernel is tainted, I have no idea. The screenshot in bug #202605 shows the same with an untainted kernel. [1] Anyone using a DVD built using makeSUSEdvd will possibly find it fails to work. For some reason, the DVD install failed to initialise the catalogues and I had to resort to using CDs instead :| Regards, David Bolt -- Member of Team Acorn checking nodes at 50 Mnodes/s: http://www.distributed.net/ AMD1800 1Gb WinXP/SUSE 9.3 | AMD2400 256Mb SuSE 9.0 | A3010 4Mb RISCOS 3.11 AMD2400(32) 768Mb SUSE 10.0 | Falcon 14Mb TOS 4.02 | A4000 4Mb RISCOS 3.11 AMD2600(64) 512Mb SUSE 10.0 | | RPC600 129Mb RISCOS 3.6 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, very similar - though the bit just above (see my previous comment) may be relevant

I will check it out on a rather better machine tomorrow (2GHz AMD though with only 256M RAM). My primary testbench is only this old K6-2/500, though 10.1 ran very happily on it (apart from the issues that we all know about regarding 10.1...)

I don't see any comments about taint. I get 'Not tainted VLI' in place of your line showing taint. May be a red herring !?

I started trying to do a net install (from local repository) but when that crashed I switched to a standard CD install (which crashed in just the same way). The testbed machine doesn't have a CD reader, but does have a network link to my file server.

We only use SMP kernels now (see my announcement ;-) - and those should work on single CPUs as well. If not, please file a bug report, so that we can investigate. Sorry Andreas, I should have made it clear - I realised (from this list) that only SMP kernels are now shipped, it seems that's probably the cause of this problem. I tried net boot (mini ISO) and CD1, both with all 3 of "default" install, "safe settings" and [net boot only] NFS server details pre-set using F4. Same symptoms each time. The system I've tried to install it upon is a Parallels virtual machine which is running under Windows on a dual Athlon system. At present Parallels only supports a single processor and that is what was seen on alpha2, the last alpha that would install on a Parallels VM.
If not, please file a bug report, so that we can investigate.
I would have, but it's already been added to an open bug about the problem of it failing to install on a Parallels VM: #202605
Please try the other boot options as well,
It doesn't matter which boot options are chosen, I still get the kernel panic. OTOH, installing on real hardware[0] seems to work just fine. This should not be a problem. The SMP kernel should run on any UP system. It looks like it's more than just Parallels having a problem with the SMP kernel. Bug #204647 is it failing in the same way on a VMware virtual machine, and there's also bug #202079 where it fails to install on a K6/K6-2 system. From this, my guess would be that there's possibly a bug in the kernel that's shown up when using an SMP kernel on older hardware[0]. Just in case it helps, a little fiddling with the VGA kernel options, and maxcpus[1], has resulted in this screenshot: URL:http://www.davjam.org/~davjam/images/parallels_10.2alpha4-#2.gif Just before the SMP line, and immediately after the freeing of unused kernel memory, there's what appears to be the kernel trying to execute an invalid op-code. [0] Not sure just what VWware identifies itself as but Parallels emulates an Intel 82815 chipset. It picks up the AMD MP1800+ of the system it running on, but only identifies it as a normal AMD Athlon. [1] Suggested in a reply to bug #204378. Is this the same image that you referenced in your mail of 7 September? Either way, it is almost identical to what I get - the only differences that I can spot are that the "tsc clocksource" is prefixed by ACPI details & I don't have the "tainted" flag set. That's on a K6-2/500 with 512M RAM FWIW (no virtual systems!) No, that one was: URL:http://www.davjam.org/~davjam/images/parallels_10.2alpha4.gif All I did was to add "vga=0x317", to get a larger screenshot, and "maxcpus=1", to force a single CPU, to the kernel options before it booted.
Either way, it is almost identical to what I get - the only differences that I can spot are that the "tsc clocksource" is prefixed by ACPI details & I don't have the "tainted" flag set.
That's something that's interested me as well. I can't figure out why it should be tainted since I haven't included any modules. Unfortunately, with it failing where it does, I can't see just what modules are being included by default.
That's on a K6-2/500 with 512M RAM FWIW (no virtual systems!)

Just out of curiosity, I replaced the boot kernel and initrd on CD1 with that from factory and the newer kernel still fails in the exact same way.
