[opensuse-factory] plasmashell heavy CPU usage
Since recent updates, I'm seeing plasmashell using 100% CPU: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 27240 roger 20 0 3902764 300312 109572 R 123.5 1.847 188:53.90 plasmashell It gets into this state after a time, not immediately after logging in, and everything becomes sluggish. It gets into this state after a time, not immediately after logging in, and everything becomes sluggish.
This is plasma on Wayland with Intel graphics.
Is this a general problem?
I get the same on a laptop with intel graphics. restarting plasmashell usually cures the "high cpu" usage. I have seen it on amd and nvidia boxes but not nearly the frequency of the intel graphics laptop. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I cannot confirm that this helps in all cases. Here's my experience, your mileage may vary: 0) Worst scenario I had to do was killing plasmashell, move all plasma* config files to a safe location and then step by step find the cause (see 4). 1) Usually this is not really a KDE/Plasma defect, but some widget ("Miniprogramm") running wild. 2) Usually these are widgets that want to have regular updates on stuff, like network or cpu monitor, even the clock (the second hand!) or any other widget displaying continuously changing data are #1 suspects 3) Start over with a new user and check step by step what is causing the CPU load. Usually helps. 4) If you're still clueless, try a little shell magic like I do: for i in `ls $HOME/.config/ -1tr | tail -5`; do cp -ar $HOME/.config/$i $HOME/Nextcloud/config/new_configs/; done This simply copies the five most recently changed files to my nextcloud account, as sort of a backup for further investigations. I call this (as an alias) when I change a setting in KDE (or any other desktop/software/tool), so that I can simply make a diff later finding out the changes and in which file they end up. Works for me, for debugging KDE or other config issues. I know it's probably a dirty hack that can be done much better, but it works for me and has helped me a lot to understand what some software is doing. -- Markus Feilner Team Lead Documentation P.S.: I moved - new home address: Wöhrdstraße 10, 93059 Regensburg - - - _This incident will be documented._ - - - +49 173 5876 838 (also via Signal), privat: +49 170 302 7092 mfeilner@suse.[com|de] http://www.suse.com G+: https://plus.google.com/+MarkusFeilner Xing: http://www.xing.com/profile/Markus_Feilner LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markusfeilner #mfeilner: Jabber, Skype, Twitter openSUSE: http://www.opensuse.org - - - SUSE Linux GmbH GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg)
