[opensuse-factory] Boot problem returns
Hi . Well OS11.2 RC2 latest updates Just done "zypper dup" it seems the old boot problem is back the machine if left to it's own devices will not boot into GUI i have to boot to init 3 log in as root then run init 5 to get a gui up it seems to just die at loading HAL that is the last thing that can be seen before the screen goes black HDD activity stops keyboard is dead the only thing is force a hard reboot . Machine is a very common Compaq Presario V5030 AMD Turion 64 ATI Radeon express M200 PCI 5955 if memory serves correctly 1.5 Gb ram . No traces left in the logs to be found this is AFAIAK a SHOW STOPPER now so lets have some ideas from the ones in the know where do i look for info on the system Pete . the sig below is NOT the machine in question before anyone gets clever -- Powered by openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2 (x86_64) Kernel: 2.6.30-rc6-git3-4- default KDE: 4.2.86 (KDE 4.2.86 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090514)) "release 1" 12:45 up 22:11, 3 users, load average: 0.79, 0.53, 0.52

The bug in radeon driver for the X200 chip is not fixed yet, but you may want to see last comment, that is: Machines with such chip have a problem with warm boot, but if you leave it powered off for a while, it will boot fine without any intervention. I checked only after 5 minutes, and it booted fine. http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=547106 The idea is that card (chip) has to loose any previously set values in hardware registers, which will happen after some time without power. The same bug in radeon driver can be responsible for problems to wake machine up after suspend to RAM, or even suspend to disk if user wants to start machine before chip registers are cleared. -- Regards, Rajko openSUSE Wiki Team: http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team People of openSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/People_of_openSUSE/About -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Evidently not on the machine in question this end

Hi . Well what i do know is that if you install 11.2RC2 completely on a bare drive finish the install and reboot straight into GUI mode no problems but ! if you boot into GUI the "Ctrl+Alt+F1" to get to a tty the video will be corrupted Out of sync and then when you reboot (needed to clear the graphics corruption) you can not boot straight into init 5 (GUI) it hangs at the Afore mentioned HAL part and althou that is After the network is setup there is no response from the system at all forcing a hard reset is the only way out but if you boot to init 3 you are fine to go init 5 as a user but the initial loging must be root else the desktop is completely unstable. -- Powered by openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2 (x86_64) Kernel: 2.6.30-rc6-git3-4- default KDE: 4.2.86 (KDE 4.2.86 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090514)) "release 1" 20:19 up 1 day 5:45, 3 users, load average: 0.61, 0.50, 0.31
