[opensuse-factory] Suggestion: website feed for breaking changes in Tumbleweed?
Would it be a good idea to set up a feed on the openSUSE website where notices of upcoming breakages and urgent fixes are provided? This would be somewhat similar to the homepage of the Arch Linux website. There is already the opensuse-factory mailing list, however, as a relatively high volume list with a fair amount of unrelated discussions (e.g. systemd v.s. other utilities), it's easy for important issues to be missed. Having said that, this would require someone responsible for managing the website and ensuring that the information on there is updated in a timely manner. Any comments would be appreciated. Also, not quite related, but does anyone know who decides when the TW emergency update repo is used? -- - Karl Cheng (Qantas94Heavy) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

[...] For me it would be sufficient if urgent security updates would be announced in this mailing list and provided independently of Tumbleweed snapshots or at least appropriately marked in "Packages changed". e.g. [opensuse-factory] Security update Tumbleweed YYYYMMDD It would make it easier delaying applying regular snapshots if necessary. cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Security updates come with the rolling system. The rolling system is supposed to be delivering stability, and if that does not always work, it must be improved and not worked around. And we have a security update bypass functionality, but this is only for really critical updates. It is a rolling release but the with the line "Please check the known defects of this snapshot before upgrading:" leads to delay applying snapshots when the system has to work, which might effect security. cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I agree, the factory mailing list can become quite active, so announcements for breaking changes can be missed or buried deep down a mail chain. For this reason, I like the idea of announcing these changes or caveats on a seperate channel. The most sensible thing would be I think to integrate this in the upgrade process directly (zypper or packagekit?), however I don't know if this is technically possible or feasable...
