[opensuse-factory] Just for noting the freetype patent expiration

Hi! Hopefully this means we can get freetype with hinting enabled into the oss repository! http://freetype.sourceforge.net/patents.html Bye. -- Atri -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Wasn't this enabled anyway in openSUSE? https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=freetype2-bc.patch&package... And the spec file says: # # The byte code interpreter is compiled in by default # # because of the following option. # # For most fonts it is disabled again by default in the # # fontconfig setup in /etc/fonts. But if it is already # # enabled at compilation time, it can be easily enabled # # at runtime. The announcement is clear about the bytecode interpreter, but I didn't fully understood the subpixel part. The GIT entry (http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freetype/freetype2.git/commit/?id=6bbbbc152...) modifies TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER, but keeps untouched (undefined) FT_CONFIG_OPTION_SUBPIXEL_RENDERING. So? What "Note that subpixel rendering per se is prior art; using a different colour filter thus circumvents Microsoft's patent claims." implies? Has anything changed about subpixel? Also, even if we could use subpixel, Mike FABIAN (I don't see recent message from him, not in Novell anymore?) commented about a problem with the subpixel implementation in Freetype: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-06/msg00511.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-06/msg00577.html No idea if it's already fixed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Unfortunately, he is no longer at Novell. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There's nothing to `fix' on the FreeType side. For good subpixel rendering, you need to apply a good colour filter (which is able to handle gamma correction too if desired). Microsoft's colour filter is patented, so you have to come up with a different one. While FreeType provides the necessary infrastructure, a higher-level application or library has to handle that. I remember him best as a fonts expert. Is there an equivalent person active in openSUSE development since he left? I haven't noticed any such. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. I'm afraid the answer is no. Apparently Peng Wu (working in China) has been laid off in October last year as well. I'm not aware of any i18n expert still working at Novell.
