There's nothing to `fix' on the FreeType side. For good subpixel rendering, you need to apply a good colour filter (which is able to handle gamma correction too if desired). Microsoft's colour filter is patented, so you have to come up with a different one. While FreeType provides the necessary infrastructure, a higher-level application or library has to handle that. I'm afraid the answer is no. Apparently Peng Wu (working in China) has been laid off in October last year as well. I'm not aware of any i18n expert still working at Novell.
