[opensuse-factory] "tmp" removed
Hello, I just had a problem I want to quote, only for information pourpose and in the case this could make an enhancement possible. for a reason yet unknow (some sort of typing error), I got the /tmp (and the /media) directories removed. most of the applications stopped working. The first was Thunderbird, saying it couldn't send mails because it could write to the tmp directory. Alas I didn't understood that it was the system wide tmp, I thought of a local folder, so I didn't foud the problem immediately. I then had to reboot. I found me in init 5, but without GUI. startx failed, even yast failed! the repair option from openSUSE 11.1 didn't find the problem either. At a moment I realized that when doing ls /, the "tmp" was white, not the good color. so a *file* tmp was at a moment created and prevented the re-creation of /tmp. removing this file, recreating /tmp solved most of the problems. notice that during this time, zypper worked quite well jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That would be a good addition to the repair functionality, then. Would you mind reporting it? (I guess it is more of a feature than a bug, so openFATE as opposed to Bugzilla.) Try to figure out what removes /tmp...
the repair option from openSUSE 11.1 didn't find the problem either.
This is a bug, repair should check if /tmp exists and is an "sticky" directory.

Most likely because it uses a temporary directory in /var... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
