For the curious readers, so 'they' can fix stuff: The underlying issue is https://github.com/openSUSE/obs-build/issues/439 The timeswitch from CET to CEST, and the KDE Team not using UTC in the .changes files, resulted in triggering this bug and in turn dates being recalculated in the rpm changelog. Consequence is, that the diff- generator could not find how the new changelog 'appends' to the old one, and resorted to giving a full log. The diff generator can be found at https://github.com/openSUSE/openSUSE-release-tools/blob/master/factory-packa... and if somebody has some spare cycles, it could be nice to teach this thing to 'shorten the diff per package' if it can't really detect the diff. (I honestly thought this community got over the 'they-attitude' - but seems not everbody got the memo: WE ARE openSUSE - there is no THEY!) Cheers, Dominique

Hey thanks for the pointer Dominique, don't misunderstand my use of they (in that specific case, it was pointing the maintainer of the tools, and also our upstream packager group of KDE proposed software). Your explanations are so valuable: the root cause, the where it happen and how WE can help to fix it. I make any needed deep apologies if someone involved in our community was offended by my previous email. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch Bareos Partner, openSUSE Member, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Dominique, first, sorry for the 'they'. I remembered the discussion about utterly long changelog quotes. And I was in the impression this had been fixed, as there had not been such long mails in quite a time (that I remembered). Your explanation does confirm this, no? The 'they' in this case refered to the Gurus that understand the details of how those mails are generated - I wouldn't even have a clue where to start looking. So the 'they' was not disrespectful, on the contrary. I'll try to use passive in the future. I do consider myself part of the community, but can only contribute within my capabilities... I think this time around we got to the bottom of the issue and actually understand it even a bit better, which will help in finding the right fix. The fact that we did not see it for a while is likley that we only switch timezones twice a year (CET->CEST->CET). The 2nd case I know when those long logs happen is in case of reverts of packages, as then the new package's timestamps are out of sync to the old one.
The 'they' in this case refered to the Gurus that understand the details of how those mails are generated - I wouldn't even have a clue where to start looking.
I gave the pointers in my reply - so this was a valid excuse before, but not anymore :) Not saying YOU have to fix it now, but if you feel like scratching an itch, this could be it. Cheers, Dominique

If it's very large, it's due to a limitation in (surprise, surprise) QWebEngine from Qt, which is used to render the mails.

The explanation makes sense but kmail's behaviour is quite unfortunate: it highlights the selected mail in folder view but keeps previous contents of the message view (e.g. another e-mail) displayed and does not indicate there is a problem in any way. The big question is (I didn't look at the code, though) whether QWebEngine can tell that it won't be able to display the mail or not. If it can, it's a bug in kmail (rather, the messageviewer library).

This is seriously ridiculous. Well, I've met bug somewhere (can't find it), the problem was in QWebEnginePage::setHtml [1] and there is (already? not sure it was there before) a warning about it's limit about roughly 20MiB limit of a percent encoded text. It's just not designed for large texts. So, IMHO, while setHtml wouldn't be redesigned for large portions of data, custom URL scheme [2] and setUrl should be used instead of setHtml. But I don't like QtWebEngine much too, it's too heavy for simple tasks while QtWebKit is deprecated. I really thought several times about modernizing of KHTML, but that's a lot of efforts and time…

With "they" I was talking about Qt upstream. Chrome is a typical Google product where the main focus is solely about commercial interests. You will realize that when you try to get a patch merged upstream. Unless it's useful to them and not only useful to others, it will usually get rejected. I would have stayed with WebKit which should be enough for 99% of the usecases of an HTML rendering engine inside a Qt application and also doesn't heavily limit the portability of Qt. Oh, very good! Well played. I confess as I tried out every email client I could find in the Tumbleweed repos, and found them all wanting or lacking in some way, either relatively small or vast, that I told myself that I wasn't really at fault for relying on Gmail for my personal stuff. (I currently use Claws and it annoys me on a multiple-times-per-day basis.) Although the latest update to Gmail is the least annoying it's ever had, the webapp has *significantly* degraded since its launch. It used to me much more powerful; now it's easier, simpler, and that today is more important than genuine functionality. But saying that, and for all it frustrates me -- for example recently Google remove the feature whereby you could select some text and reply and it correctly quoted just that and then positioned the cursor correctly beneath it -- it's *still* better than basically any FOSS or freeware email client I have seen in a decade and a half. If the FOSS community, as some have claimed, is better at copying existing tools than innovating and creating new ones, then why there is no FOSS clone of Gmail Version 1 which can run against any IMAP server is a mystery to me. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o.
