[opensuse-factory] Problem with lock screen in Gnome 3.10 (openSUSE 13.1)
Hi. First excuse me if this is not the right list. I detect (and I hope that this will not a "feature") that if you install an opensuse 13.1 system with KDE, and later I decide to install Gnome, the lock screen feature; a) doesn't appears in the gnome menu (between config apps and logoff session/off computer). b) if you try to lock the screen with Super+L also doesn't works. But, if you configure in Yast -> Configure editor of /etc/sysconfig files, to change KDE in favor of Gnome as windowmanager and displaymanager (with GDM), the lock screen runs without any problem (after a system reboot). Because I understand that this is something misconfigured of a fail in the defaul config, I opened (or try) a ticket in bugtraq, but although it does not the first time I open a ticket there, do not seem to ship anywhere (not even reach me my copy to my email). This is the ticket: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849473 Thank you and please, excuse me my bad english :-/ Regards -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a nice day ;-) TooManySecrets /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | FreeBSD Since 4.1 \ / - NO HTML/RTF in e-mail | GNU/Linux Since 1993. As I understand it, you're still using KDM, so the GDM lock functionality isn't available to you. GNOME detects this so the menu option is hidden from you. That part isn't actually a bug, changing the display manager from KDM to GDM resolves the issue. What is perhaps an invalid implementation however is not being able to use CTRL+ALT+L to lock by default. I've not looked into this yet myself (a relatively new openSUSE 13.1 user) but I can confirm it is the default behavior of other distributions to have this shortcut start the locking (I suspect this is more a packaging issue than anything) Kind Regards, Michael Ikey Doherty On Thu, 2013-11-14 at 15:48 +0100, Manuel Trujillo (TooManySecrets) wrote:

With GNOME 3.10, the standard shortcut for locking in GNOME was changed to Super+L from CTRL+ALT+L In earlier versions of GNOME, we used CTRL+ALT+L I'm not sure 'why' it got changed, I don't believe it was a conscious decision by the openSUSE GNOME team, we just kept along with upstreams decision :) I'm sure we could package CTRL+ALT+L as the default in our GNOME if people really wanted it, but having it as Super+L does make it easier for newcomers who are used to Windows.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

With GNOME 3.10, the standard shortcut for locking in GNOME was changed to Super+L from CTRL+ALT+L Ah ok. Kinda makes more sense, less keyboard work.
In earlier versions of GNOME, we used CTRL+ALT+L Old habits die hard :)
I'm not sure 'why' it got changed, I don't believe it was a conscious decision by the openSUSE GNOME team, we just kept along with upstreams decision :) Why not? Less maintenance ^^
I'm sure we could package CTRL+ALT+L as the default in our GNOME if people really wanted it, but having it as Super+L does make it easier for newcomers who are used to Windows..
Perhaps, but I guess that now turns a dual-bug-report into one wishlist item. Perhaps Super+L is more natural, as a user of windows is used to "Win+R", etc, already.

Thanks for this additional input / testing! So more likely we're looking at an incompatibility KDM / GNOME (there are similar weird things with GDM and other DEs).

Sorry.. there is limited resource and I might have wrongly prioritised this bug on my own list. I'll see what I can do for you. Best regards, Dominique PS: Bugzilla per default does not send out mails to you about things you do (there is sort of an assumption that you know what you just did). This can be configured in the mail settings of bugzilla. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, this is me. I don't know why Bugzilla doesn't notify (if I remember this is the method).

I'm using openSUSE with KDE and Gnome since10, and this is the first time I'm with this "feature", but you know the system better like me ;-)

Thank you very much!!

This isn't the first bug opened by me, but the first doesn't send me an email after opened. I'm getting old I think... I would like to apologize with you, Richard and all the rest of the list, because I do not know the reason but the gmail system was "hiding" all mail from the list :-( Cheers. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a nice day ;-) TooManySecrets /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | FreeBSD Since 4.1 \ / - NO HTML/RTF in e-mail | GNU/Linux Since 1993. A quick follow up here. This behavior changed back with GNOME 3.8; the lock screen is, as it was already said, managed / handled by GDM directly. so when you press 'Lock screen', in essence, a communication channel is opened to GDM in order to re-use the pam environment to re-authenticate. The ultimate goal is to move the entire session into a systemd user session (hopefully with GNOME 3.12), which means the re-authentication could and should be handled on that level again. So for now: sorry, no solution to that issue. I think if we have the solution, because we have the knowledge and why, so that in future versions may take into account and act accordingly :) Thank you very much Dominique.
