[opensuse-factory] dumbfounded by Enlightenment
I've never tried E before. I'd always managed to get along well enough or better with TDE, KDE3 or KDE4, but since all are missing from Leap, and K5 remains intolerable, I had to try something other than too simplistic IceWM or TWM, and picked E to try for a fresh installation on a 3.0GHz Core2Duo with Intel 945G video. I'm dumbfounded what a sloth it is, and that it won't even start without compositing enabled to slow everything down. Its unintuitive themes, colors and fonts management, and Goth theming, would make it a non-starter even if it wasn't so slow. What the secret to changing a window's size is I have yet to figure out. Seriously disappointing. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. And this was send for what particular reason? To insult the developers? To start flame? Or you just feel frustrated? In any of the above cases please start a blog and write your rants there. If it is supposed to be about developements then you should report bugs or communicate with the developers...

I was hoping someone who uses or develops it might suggest solutions for problems described. Something so basic as grabbing a window corner to resize both horizontally and vertically simultaneously ought to be obvious, yet here isn't.

I don't read blogs, so see no point in writing one.

This mailing list is for communication with developers, and I see no better place for E discussion on http://lists.opensuse.org/ or elsewhere openSUSE. As no Leap has ever been released, I can't think of a more appropriate location for discussion of it than here. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Well, since openSUSE decided to include Enlightment in the distribution, it becomes obvious that openSUSE shall be responsible for testing and making sure that it works - on a best effort basis. It is also all of our responsiblity to help out with any issues users are seeing and communicate with upstream developers to formulate resolution. Packagers and maintainers are often developers. Various packages come in various flavors, among which some for enlightenment include string "suse" or "SUSE", which are unlikely to come from upstream. Enlightenment is one of the selections on the Leap installer's DE selection screen, a reason why I chose it for testing. My OP here was in substantial part, if not mostly, a test report, and this is a place, if not the place, where test reports belong, no? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." If that, then try to communicate in a way that doesn't sounds like an insult to them. People are way more eager to help when you make them feel appreciated. Try to put yourself in their shoes and read read your message again when you write requests like this. That said, you may find openSUSE package maintainers here but probably not the people who develop E upstream. Thank you for your kind and warm words. 1] I share your "concerns" about the speed of E on Intel video cards, Enlightenment Foundation Libraries were always demanding on quality of drivers and had problems with Intel (I have the same). E18+ can't disable compositing at all only its effects. You can try E17 from X11:Enlightenment:Factory instead to enjoy the speed. 2] Themes, colors, fonts - I was satisfied with what I got, you are not. It's matter of taste (and skill). If you'd ever feel the urge to create E theme, you can find it's theming engine is quite powerful and community welcome every new theme effort. Have a nice day. Tomas
